Bible Truth for Everyday Life

15 Uplifting Bible Verses About Hope and Strength

As the season changes here, I’ve been intermittently looking back and looking ahead.  I’m reminding myself of one truth: Jesus is my hope for the future, and he is my hope in the face of my deepest disappointments.  I’ve been soaking in God’s Word, speaking Bible verses about hope and strength

I invite you to turn to Jesus for hope by spending some time with these words as well.  Be sure to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you find hope in the Lord.

15 Bible Verses About Hope and Strength

I don’t know what your past season looked like.

Maybe you put everything you had into your career, and there’s still no fruit to be seen.

You might have had goals for your finances, your waistline, your marriage, or your ministry.  Maybe some of these areas are worse off now than they were when you had all that hope.

Even worse, you might have achieved every goal you set for yourself.  You lost the weight, gained the promotion, climbed out of debt, and saw a dream come to fruition.  And then you woke up, took a hard look at it all, and realized you still lacked the fulfillment you hoped it would all bring.

Maybe this is the worst kind of disappointment of all: Reaching a goal, only to realize you still feel just as empty as you felt when you set out.

Regardless of where this day finds you, let’s turn to God’s word as we meditate on these 15 Bible verses about hope and strength in Christ.

15 Uplifting Bible Verses About Hope and Strength in Jesus

1. Matthew 1:23 (ESV)

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

When Jesus came to earth, God came to dwell among us.  We are loved so deeply that our God left is heavenly throne to step into a human body and live among us.  This is love.

We have hope because the living God pursues us.  For those who have received Christ, Immanuel is with us always.  Even more, he dwells within us.

2. Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God wants his peace to surround you.  The key to experiencing his peace is to surrender your worries to him and talk to him about all things.

When we learn to surrender our worries to God, he fills us with hope and peace, guarding our minds in Christ.

3. 1 John 4:16

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

If you love God, he abides in you!  The Living God comes and makes his dwelling within you.  This is a wonderful promise.

Hope dwells within you!

4. John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

The greatest demonstration of love is for a parent to allow harm to come to his child on behalf of another person.

God demonstrated his love for us when he allowed Jesus to die for us.  The Holy Spirit now dwells in the heart of everyone who believes this and follows Jesus.  We have hope because the Spirit gives us hope.

5. Revelation 3:20

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

This is a message for all of God’s children.

At times, we turn our backs on him.  Meanwhile, Jesus pursues us.  He wants a relationship with all of his children.  Have you responded to him as he knocks at the door of your heart?

Open the door, and he will fill you with his hope.

10 More Verses About Hope and Strength in Hard Times

6. Revelation 21:3

Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

We have hope beyond this life.

One day, God will create a new earth.  We will all dwell with him, face-to-face, for eternity.

7. Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

God’s presence is like a light for our paths.  Trust that because God is with you, you don’t need to live in fear.

Cling to the hope that God will guide your steps.

8. Deuteronomy 31:8

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

This verse is a wonderful promise.  God will never leave you or forsake you.

I encourage you to memorize this verse and speak it when you feel alone and hopeless.  God will never abandon you.

9. Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

Are you facing a difficult situation in your life?

God is with you.  He will help you cross the raging rivers of life and walk through every fire with you.

10. John 16:33

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

For years, I felt surprised every time life became difficult.  Finally, I realized that trouble is to be expected.  Jesus promised trouble.  But he also promised his peace.

Are you facing a storm?  Don’t be surprised.  Also, remind yourself that Jesus has not left your side.

No matter what your storm looks like, Jesus is with you in the boat.  He won’t leave you (Deut. 31:6).  Lean into him and ask him to strengthen you.  Keep your heart open to him.  Keep seeking him.  He won’t waste this storm.

11. Isaiah 42:6

“I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you”

God hasn’t left us to navigate life’s storms on our own.

When you don’t know which way to turn, cling to the promise in Isaiah 42:6.

God is with you in this storm, and he will protect you as he takes hold of your hand.  Cry out to him and trust that he will never take his eye off you.

12. Psalm 16:8

“I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.”

Stormy seas in life threaten to shake us to the core.  By learning to set the Lord always before us—and keeping our eyes on him—we need not be shaken.

What might it look like to set the Lord always before you?

For me, this looks like training myself to turn to God first when crises strike.  By practicing turning toward him, I find peace and stability.

13. James 1:12

“Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

At times, God rewards us with temporal rewards in this life.  For example, times of sickness increase our gratitude for good health.  Times of financial stress help us become more thankful for seasons of stability.

God also promises eternal rewards for those who remain steadfast.  We will receive these rewards one day in heaven.

One of the primary ways the enemy attacks us is by sending fearful, anxious, and hopeless thoughts.  For a free resource to help you overcome these attacks, I invite you to download my free 10-day devotional Set Freeright here.  You will learn to find victory by drawing near to God.

14. Romans 8:18

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

We find this truth in Paul’s letter to the Roman church.

If you feel like you cannot take another moment of the struggle you’re facing, remember that this world is not your final resting place.  One day, this storm will pass, and God will wipe away every tear.

15. 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

Never forget that God can use your troubles for good.

God uses difficulties to shape us into the image of Jesus.  As we grow in maturity, we are better able to share God’s love and compassion with others.  We also develop resilience and perseverance.

I now invite you to apply these Bible verses about hope and strength to your everyday moments.

Apply These Bible Verses About Hope and Strength to Your Life

Regardless of where this day finds you, I encourage you to reflect on the past season.  Assess your goals, and bring your hard losses to Jesus.

Be real about your deepest disappointments.

You just might discover something surprising about your deepest disappointments.  Disappointments are gateways to hope.

Disappointments remind us we’ll never be fully satisfied in this life.  We were made for face-to-face communion with the One who created us.  We were made to worship him forever and live in unbroken fellowship with him.  Every disappointment from your past season is an invitation to remind yourself of your true source of hope: Jesus.

Every disappointment from your past is an invitation to remind yourself of your true source of hope: Jesus. #HopeinJesus #Hope #HopeScripture Share on XBible verses about hope and strength

Disappointment reminds us that no amount of material possessions, social esteem, or even ministry success will ever leave us fully satisfied.  We were made to walk with God.  We won’t be fully satisfied until we’re in his presence—standing before his throne.

If you’re feeling disappointed today, if your dreams haven’t come to fruition—or if they have, and you’re still struggling—let your disappointment lead you to a place of hope.  Let it lead you to the hope of what is to come.

If your hope is deflated today, let these promises breathe new life into your soul.  Today’s disappointment can point you to tomorrow’s hope.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
