Overcoming Trials

Six Encouraging Bible Verses About Overcoming Adversity

Are you facing a difficult time?  Today, we’ll unpack six encouraging Bible verses about overcoming adversity.

Let’s start with a conversation about what happens when we learn to push through pain and hardships.

Bible Verses About Overcoming Adversity

I take the boys to the woods on an almost spring morning.

The skunk cabbage is rising through the muddied earth like a foretaste of the vibrant life soon to fill this wooded valley.  Caleb’s seven-year-old legs have grown long and lean over the past year, and he hardly complains when we walk together now.  I’m taken back to a season when every walk through this valley was a test in pushing through pain as I urged him to keep walking at my side.

It surprises me that he makes the walk without complaining this year.

Maybe last year’s efforts are finally paying off.

As we meander amid the peeping frogs, I consider the times life has required me to push through pain throughout the past few years.

Pushing Through Pain

I imagine you’ve had your own hues of pain streaking the canvas of your story.  You’ve faced times when you wondered if you had it in you to keep going.  Maybe you wondered if it was time to up and throw in the towel, call it quits, and move to the next thing.

You know all the clichés about hard times.  You know today’s pain is preparing you for tomorrow’s journey.  Pain shapes you and strengthens you.  You know you can choose to stay soft and be molded to look more like Jesus, or you can grow hard and turn from God.

But here’s what you might have missed if you weren’t looking closely enough: Sometimes, pain is the precise vessel God uses to usher you into the most abundant kind of joy you ever imagined.

It’s a paradox, but there’s truth beneath these words.

It just might take the worst kind of loss to open your eyes to what you still have.

Sometimes, it takes defeat to show you all you haven’t lost.

Sometimes, God uses a sickbed of suffering to help you see all that’s still right in your life.

Bible Verses About Overcoming Adversity

Pain shakes things up. Pain is always an invitation to open our eyes to what we still have—to hold on a little tighter and give thanks a little longer.  To soften our hard parts and sand off the rough edges.

Where is life painful for you these days?

Your invitation is simple: You can harden your heart, become bitter that you have to push through the pain, and keep a closed mind.  Or you can let the pain soften you and deepen you.  You can let it mold you to emerge looking a bit more like the person you want to be.

Here are six truths to help carry you through life’s painful seasons:

1. God will give you all you need to push through pain in your life.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 ESV

2. God’s right hand upholds you as you push through pain and suffering.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.  Isaiah 41:10

3. God sings over you as a loving father sings over his child.

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save . . . he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing. Zephaniah 3:17

4. Nothing can separate you from God’s love.

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39

5. God is not just with you, he is in you.

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16

6. God has already prepared the path where your feet now tread.

“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”  Deuteronomy 31:8Bible verses about overcoming adversity
