Bible Truth for Everyday Life

Why Today Is Going to Be a Good Day

Above a scrim of wispy cirrus clouds, a hawk cries out as it soars upon some unseen current.  For the first time since autumn, we slept with the windows open last night.  Awakening to a cacophony of birdsong and the melodies of God’s created world feels like a gift given directly from his hand.  “Today is going to be a good day,” I whisper.

Smiling, I climb from the sheets, make the bed, and think of these eight simple words as I brush my teeth and greet the three children who await me downstairs.

I repeat these words as I make the coffee and prepare breakfasts for everyone: “Today is going to be a good day.”

I speak these words as I sit by the window with my Bible and take a moment to rest in God’s presence: “Today is going to be a good day.”

The past couple of months have dealt us some hard days.  We’ve faced prolonged illnesses, debilitating injuries, financial setbacks, disappointments, difficult memories, and the simple wear and tear of the daily grind.

You have your own version of a daily grind and a tough season.  I hope you’re not in the thick of it right now, but if you are, hold onto hope.  The Lord longs to align our hearts with his heart and help us fix our eyes on what is pure, lovely, and good in our lives.

Today Is Going to Be a Good Day

Today, I’m thrilled to offer you another tool to help you step into the joy-filled life you long to live.  The eight words I’ve been repeating—“Today is going to be a good day”—aren’t my words.  These words are the title of Dr. Michelle Bengston’s newest book, and this book is reminding me of the power of focusing on what is good in my life.

Psychologists teach that the brain is wired to fixate on whatever happens to be the greatest problem at any given time.  Our focus naturally drifts toward the negative.

Despite this tendency, the Lord wants to renew our minds.  According to recent work in the field of brain science, neuroscientists have discovered that God wired our brains for joy to be our natural state.  By frequently and deliberately focusing on God’s goodness and his gifts in our lives, we strengthen our neuropathways for joy!1

After discovering this teaching a few months ago, I’ve been gathering as many resources as possible to help me strengthen my relationship with God through joy-filled interactions.  Dr. Michelle’s book has become a transforming tool as her words help me press into the joy of the Lord on a daily basis.

What You’ll Find Inside The Book:

Today Is Going to Be a Good Day offers 90 devotional readings filled with promises from God.  Each reading begins with the words, “Today is going to be a good day because . . .” Each reading also points to a promise from God in Scripture and includes a commentary from Dr. Michelle, a question for reflection, a prayer, and a recommended song.

I was initially drawn to this book because of the great respect I hold for Dr. Michelle as a sister in Christ and professional in the field of mental health.  I’ve been following her writing, her blog, and her podcast for years, and she is the real deal.  As I’ve been reading this book, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Michelle on a personal basis, and her authenticity, love for God, and love for people are inspiring me as a writer, friend, mother, and follower of Christ.

I’ll leave you with a few of my favorite quotes from this book, and I encourage you to get your own copy today!

Quotes from Dr. Michelle:

1. Today is going to be a good day because God is with us and holds us up with the strength of his right hand while directing our path.

2. Today is going to be a good day because no matter what we face, we are not in it alone. God goes into battle with us and promises to hear the cries of his people.

3. Today is going to be a good day because no matter what we face, God is for us. People may not see eye to eye with us, and relationships can go sideways or even terribly wrong. Prodigals may walk away. Those we thought we could depend on may be facing their own situations. But God remains faithful!

4. Today is going to be a good day because no matter what we face, no matter what we go through, we can hold on to God’s promises. He promises that our troubles and suffering won’t last very long and that his blessing will be upon us forever.

5. Today is going to be a good day because regardless of what heartache you face, no matter what miracle you need, God is still on his throne.

Hold Onto Hope

Regardless of what you are facing today, friend, God is still on his throne.  Challenges will come your way.  Trouble will greet you at your doorstep.  God didn’t promise us ease and comfort.  However, we can trust him to hold true to every one of his promises.

As for me, the more I repeat these eight words, the more they sink into the marrow of my soul.  The doctor might call with bad news.  The kids might all get the stomach bug.  My vehicle might break down along the road, and the hackers might come after my blog and my bank account again.  But there will be rays of light shining into even the darkest days.  God will hold fast to his promises.  And because God is always good, today is going to be a good day.

God will hold fast to his promises. And because God is always good, today is going to be a good day. #Todayisgoingtobeagoodday Share on X

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
