Today, I’m sharing the verses I sent her.  If you are hurting today, I invite you to soak in these words today, too.  You are not alone.

God hasn’t missed a moment of your pain, and he wants to comfort you.

Bible Verses for a Brokenhearted Woman

1. Joshua 1:9 ESV

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Dear friend, when nothing else brings comfort, find your comfort in this: God is with you in your sadness.  He loves you.  He wants to hold you and comfort you.

God promises never to leave us, and he will carry us through the darkest valleys.

2. Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

God’s right hand denotes action.  God has not stopped acting in your life.

He waits to strengthen us, and he upholds us with his righteous right hand.  Lean into him if you are suffering today.

3. Zephaniah 3:17

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save . . . he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

When my children suffer with fevers, bad dreams, and fears of all sorts, I often hold them in the night and sing over them.

In the same way, God sings over us.  He wants to quiet us with his love.  He is a good Father, and he invites us to draw near to him for comfort when life is tough.

I invite you to close your eyes and imagine God holding you in his arms.  Imagine him singing over you.  He delights in you.  Let his love wash over you.

4. Romans 8:38-39

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

During times of sadness, it can be tempting to wonder if God has taken his love away from us.

We cannot understand everything God permits, but we can trust that his love can never be taken away from his children.  Rest in this love today.  He wants you to find comfort in his love.Bible Verses for a Brokenhearted Woman

5. 1 Corinthians 3:16

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

Because God dwells in you, you can trust in him to comfort you, sustain you, and support you.  He has poured out his Spirit on all of his children, and his Holy Spirit equips us to face even the darkest days in his strength, with his peace.

If you lack peace and strength as you grieve, ask God, through the power of his Spirit, to fill you with the peace that passes understanding.  His peace will give you strength.

6. Deuteronomy 31:8

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

When I feel worried or anxious, a close friend often reminds me, “God is already there.”

No matter what you are facing today, God is already there.  He is beside you, behind you, within you, and ahead of you.  Nothing can take him by surprise.  Trust that he will lead you, sustain you, and give you all you need.

7. Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God wants his peace to surround you.  The key to experiencing his peace is to surrender your worries to him and talk to him about all things.

When we learn to surrender our worries to God, he fills us with hope and peace, guarding our minds in Christ.

8. John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

The greatest demonstration of love is for a parent to allow harm to come to his child on behalf of another person.

God demonstrated his love for us when he allowed Jesus to die for us.  The Holy Spirit now dwells in the heart of everyone who believes this and follows Jesus.  We have hope because the Spirit gives us hope.  Cling to this hope as you navigate this broken heart.

9. Revelation 21:3

Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

We have hope beyond this life.

One day, God will create a new earth.  We will all dwell with him, face-to-face, for eternity.

10. Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

God is with you.  He will help you cross the raging rivers of life and walk through every fire with you.

11. John 16:33

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

For years, I felt surprised every time life became difficult.  Finally, I realized that trouble is to be expected.  Jesus promised trouble.  But he also promised his peace.

Are you facing a storm?  Don’t be surprised.  Also, remind yourself that Jesus has not left your side.

No matter what your storm looks like, Jesus is with you in the boat.  He won’t leave you (Deut. 31:6).  Lean into him and ask him to strengthen you.  Keep your heart open to him.  Keep seeking him.  He won’t waste this storm.

12. Isaiah 42:6

“I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you”

When you don’t know which way to turn, cling to the promise in Isaiah 42:6.

God is with you in this time, and he will protect you as he takes hold of your hand.  Cry out to him and trust that he will never take his eye off you.

13. Psalm 16:8

“I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.”

What might it look like to set the Lord always before you?

For me, this looks like training myself to turn to God first when crises strike.  By practicing turning toward him, I find peace and stability.

God uses difficulties to shape us into the image of Jesus.  As we grow in maturity, we are better able to share God’s love and compassion with others.  We also develop resilience and perseverance.

I now invite you to apply these Bible verses for a brokenhearted woman to your everyday moments.  Join me in the woods, and I’ll share a glimpse into my own brokenness.

14. Psalm 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

As you mourn this loss, cling to this promise.  God is near.  He will not abandon you.

Resist the temptation to turn away from him in anger or offense.  He wants to heal you and bless you.  He is able to redeem this loss.

15. Ecclesiastes 11:5

As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

We simply cannot understand all of God’s ways.

Take time to grieve this loss.  Meanwhile, ask God to help you trust him with what you cannot understand.  This is where faith is tested.

16. 1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

You might be feeling anxious as you look to the future.  God is inviting you to cast your worries onto him.  He wants to help you live with the deep trust that he will fulfill his purpose.

17. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

As you walk this out, God is gently inviting you to climb higher in trust.  In the meantime, he will help you know him in a deeper, more experiential way.  He will also make your paths straight and heal your heart.  Will you turn to him today?

Apply These Bible Verses for a Brokenhearted Woman to Your Life

The lingering daylight leads us to the woods again, and I sink into a moss-covered log while the kids throw sticks into the water. Something about the scene feels alive in the most organic way.  It’s like a gentle reminder of how to have hope when you’re feeling broken inside.

I’m thinking about life and fresh starts as the moisture of the sphagnum moss permeates my thin pants.

It seems the rotting log is absorbing my weight as I enhance the decomposition and press into the dirt. The moss is all around me now, sucking its life from the rotting log’s decomposing nutrients.

My mind shifts to Christ and his illustration of the wheat. There will be no harvest without a complete breaking of the kernel of wheat. Life comes from brokenness.

It’s the same with the moss. Because the tree gives of itself, the moss grows to become lush and abundant.

When You’re Feeling Broken Inside

As I bask in the silence of the forest, I’m reminded of several truths:

When life is hard and we feel broken, God is always at work in us.

The brokenness is important because we must first be broken before God can shape us to look more like his Son.  As a wise friend once noted, we should never deprive ourselves of the gift of rock-bottom moments.

I think of the birth of our children and the breaking that comes with emerging into the cold world. A mother’s body is broken on behalf of her child.

I think of the cross.  Jesus’ body was broken so that we might have eternal life. I think of every hard season in my life, dying to myself so that fruit might come.

If you’re feeling broken inside today, hold onto these truths about the work God wants to do in your heart and life.

1. When you’re feeling broken inside, God is preparing something beautiful for you.

God doesn’t directly cause every heartbreak we face in life.  Things go wrong because we live in a broken world.  However, God wants to use this brokenness for your good.

Your brokenness might be the backdrop for the miracle God wants to do in your life, too.  Keep your heart soft toward him.  He loves you.  He allows this brokenness only so that he might form something beautiful.

Keep seeking his face.  He is with you, tenderly loving you.  He will never leave you, and he wants to use this for God.

God shapes our broken hearts to look more like Jesus as he pieces us back together. #hopeinJesus #encounteringGod Share on X

2. When your heart is broken, God’s light shines through the cracks.

My life felt most broken when a long string of unwise decisions left me reeling with pain.

Though I’ve been healed and transformed, there are parts of my story that aren’t fun to relive. However, God uses these parts to shine his light through my own story and offer hope to those who are dealing with the same struggles I once faced.

His light shines through the cracks of my failures, and he receives the glory for his redemption. Life springs from death.

God wants his light to shine through your brokenness, too.  Will you lean into him and let his light heal you?  He is waiting.Bible Verses for a Brokenhearted Woman

3. God redeems those who know they are broken, not the ones who assume they are whole.

We are all broken.

Doing life on our own leads to striving, and striving leads to emptiness.

Only the broken realize they need to be put back together. Only the broken realize they can’t save themselves.

I spent many years living in my own strength, thinking my good works would earn my ticket into heaven. Only when I was broken inside did I realize that I had no power to redeem my life. Only the sacrifice of Christ can redeem my life.

If you realize that you are broken, you are ready for a fresh encounter with God today.  What is he showing you?

4. Today’s pain prepares us for tomorrow’s challenges.

God has great plans for your life.  However, he needs to prepare your heart before he leads you into these plans.  Part of this process includes allowing pain to shape and mold you.

Without the difficult time you are facing now, you won’t be prepared for the greatness that awaits you.

I encourage you to do the hard work of grieving and walking through this broken season.  Stay close to Jesus.  Pour your heart out to him.  Let him carry you.  This challenging time will lead you to a spacious place of beauty.  Keep pressing forward.

Regardless of where you’re encountering something that feels like death today, my prayer is that you’ll look to Christ. He knows about the sting of death, and he overcame it at the cross. Victory is coming. Until then, may we continue to lay our lives down so that he might live through us.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
