4 Practical Ways to Overcome Fear With Faith
Welcome to our second post in the Set Free series. Today, we’ll talk about how to overcome fear with faith. This series offers a taste of what you’ll find in my paperback book, Lean Into Grace.
And now, let’s talk about rising above our greatest fears.
How to Overcome Fear With Faith
Through the frosted windowpane, the world is colored by shapes. An angular patch of green breathes life into the dull surroundings where the neighbor has tended to her plot of earth. The C-shaped stretch of curving country road delineates the wild from the tame.
I get lost in the scene and feel like I’ve stepped out of the latest battle for just a moment of reprieve. I’ve been trying to overcome fear with faith, but I feel like I’m losing the battle.
We’ve walked through one battle after another throughout the past months, and I’m starting to feel defeated.
“Lord, I need you to deliver me from the fear that has me paralyzed,” I pray quietly. “I am desperate for your grace.”
I remember Jim Wilder’s definition of grace: God working to accomplish what we cannot do for ourselves.
Yes, this.
I am desperate for this movement of the Lord.
Overcome Fear With Faith
Today, I need him to deliver me from a fear that won’t relent.
“Father, show me how to lean into your grace amid this battle with fear,” I pray.
Immediately, I remember a battle our family faced in a different season. Through the struggle, the Lord showed me his desire to work in my life and accomplish what I couldn’t accomplish in my own strength.
He showed me that he wanted to change the way I perceived fear—to let fear become a prompt that nudged me to run to Jesus, letting Jesus defeat fear for me.
4 Ways to Stand Against Fear
How do we run to Jesus and let him do the work of pushing out our greatest fears? Over time, the Lord showed me several ways to run to Jesus in fearful moments. I share these insights with you today with the hope that they will help you find victory over fear as well.
1. Speak a fear-fighting verse in the face of fear.
First, whenever fear arises within us, we stand on the Word of God.
We plant our feet on Truth and anchor ourselves in the Lord.
For me, this meant finding a fear-fighting Bible verse and speaking it every time I felt afraid.
What are you afraid of today? Search your Bible for a verse that speaks Truth over this fear. Speak the verse out loud every time you feel afraid. By doing so, you align yourself with God and push back against the spiritual forces of darkness.
2. Overcome fear with faith by seeing fear as a prompt to look toward God in worship.
Second, we can overcome fear when it becomes a prompt that reminds us to worship God. We can find fear-fighting worship songs and worship the One who is still on his throne amid our fears.
In this way, fear becomes a prompt to worship the King of Kings! Talk about defeating the enemy with his own weapon!
If we can praise God in the waiting, sincerely lifting our hearts in worship and adoration, we defeat the enemy who wants us to worship worry, doubt, and fear. #fearfighting #OvercomingFear Share on X
3. Regularly pause what you’re doing, and glance heavenward.
Song of Solomon 4:9 tells us that a single glance toward Jesus captivates his heart. The next time you feel afraid, stop what you’re doing and look heavenward.
Imagine Jesus as he reigns over every power and authority from his heavenly throne.
Your glance captivates his heart. As his heart overflows with captivated joy (because he loves you so much), his joy will give you strength (Nehemiah 8:10).
4. Overcome fear with faith through gratitude.
We can also overcome fear with gratitude.
Find something for which you can thank God and tell him about it.
Even better, find ten things and write them down.
Giving thanks does more than we might imagine. Appreciation actually calms the limbic system. By thanking God, you help your central nervous system return to peace. You align your body with the Word of God and move toward victory.

Something shifted in me when I learned to run to Jesus amid our fears a few years ago. As I lifted my heart in worship, fear had to flee. The circumstances didn’t change, but everything about the way I saw the future was radically transformed.
I’m standing on these truths today, too.
If you’re fighting fear today, I encourage you to turn to God’s Word. Find a verse to speak in the face of fear.
Claim a fear-fighting worship song. Sing it when you feel afraid.
Keep looking toward Jesus and giving thanks.
God wants to help you rise above even your greatest fears.
