God’s Power in Us: Power Perfected in Weakness
Thirteen years ago, I became a mom, and life as I had known it changed forever. Today, I invite you to join me in the hospital room at the beginning of my motherhood journey, and we’ll talk about experiencing God’s power in us when we feel weak.
God’s Power in Us
Outside the hospital window, an apricot glow arises from behind the unclothed tree line. Dawn is coming. Today is my first full day as a mother, and I’m weary. I slept less than an hour last night and cannot move after yesterday’s emergency C-section.
Now, more than ever, I need God’s power to carry me in my weakness.
If I’m brutally honest, this all feels like too much.
Maybe you can relate.
You might not have experienced this sentiment in a hospital bed, but you’ve probably endured a few seasons when life felt like too much. Just when you thought you couldn’t possibly handle one more crisis, everything became exponentially more difficult, and you felt overwhelmed and alone.
In these moments, some of us pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and hurry to clean up life’s messes.
There is a time to clean up the mess.
However, more than mustering up more self-effort, God calls us to press closer to him and leave room for his grace.
When God imparts his grace, he works in our lives to accomplish everything we cannot do in our own strength. We press close to him, and he makes his power known in our weaknesses.
God’s Power in Us When We Are Weak
Someone once declared, “God will never give you more than you can handle.” I’m not sure who first spoke these words, but they don’t align with God’s character or the realities in our lives. God often gives us more than we can handle as he teaches us to rely on his sufficiency.
As I held our first child and kissed her fuzzy head in the hospital room, God reminded me of nine short words: “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).
I knew he was not asking me to equip myself for the calling of motherhood. He wasn’t calling me to perfection or self-sufficient strength; instead, he was teaching me to trust him. He reminded me that he would give me all I needed to care for our child.
God’s power in us is perfected in weakness.
That moment in the hospital took place many years ago, but I remember it often. It has become an anchor on my journey through both parenthood and life. Every time I start to doubt my ability to raise my children, pursue a dream, or step out in faith, I remind myself that my weakness is the perfect platform for God to show up in his power. He provides all I need for every step of this journey.
God is not calling you to hold your world together either.
Remember this: Your weakest areas are the precise places where God is waiting to move and make his power known.
God is inviting you to new levels of trust. He is allowing this weakness so that you can experience his power and encounter him in new ways.
