10 Encouraging Christmas Verses About Hope
As I sit in the forest, my bones throb with the cold ache of winter. The creek flows soundlessly—waiting for freeze-up. I’ve come to the woods to connect with my Creator, and I pull out my Bible in search of Christmas verses about hope to prepare my heart for the month ahead.
Christmas Verses About Hope
Over the years, I’ve learned that when I fail to keep my eyes on the reason for celebrating, I get pulled into the flurry of stress and overactivity.
I’m searching for verses about hope because, at the heart of the matter, Christmas is about hope.
At Christmas, we celebrate the hope we find in a God who left heaven’s throne room to come and dwell among us. When Jesus walked on earth, he carried our sorrows and faced every human emotion.
He made a way for us to directly approach God, knowing our sins had been forgiven.
Let’s look at 10 Christmas verses about hope together today.
10 Christmas Verses About Hope in Jesus
1. Luke 1:67-70 (ESV)
And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old…”
Before Jesus was born, Zechariah the priest referred to Jesus as a “horn of salvation.”
He declared that Jesus would come to save us from our sins and reconcile us with God. We have hope because Zechariah’s words became reality.
2. John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John lived with Jesus and was very close to him. Here are the first words of John’s account of Jesus’ life: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
John was showing that just as we express our innermost thoughts to others through words, Jesus was God’s Living Word, sent to the world to show humankind God’s heart of love. Jesus existed with God at the creation of the world and will always exist with God.
We have hope in Jesus because he is the Living Word guiding our lives.
3. Luke 1:78-79
Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
When Jesus came to earth, he brought light and truth. Before his incarnation, the world walked in spiritual darkness. Now, those who receive Jesus as Lord and Savior have the light of Christ to guide us in the way of peace. What a wonderful promise!
4. Matthew 2:1-2
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
I find the story of the wise men deeply moving. These men traveled far in search of Jesus, and when they found him, they responded by worshiping him. In the same way, when Jesus reveals himself in our lives, our most sincere response should be pure worship.
5. Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Long before Jesus was born, the prophet, Isaiah, offered these words. He declared that Jesus would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
We have hope because Jesus fits all of these descriptions. He counsels us. He is one with God the Father. Jesus is our Everlasting Father, and he fills our lives with peace that surpasses understanding.

And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.
We also have hope because Jesus’ kingdom will never end. This earth will one day pass away and be replaced with a new earth. Meanwhile, Jesus will reign, and his kingdom will last for eternity. This is a tremendous source of eternal hope for all of his followers.
7. John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
The ultimate act of love is for a parent to allow his children to suffer on behalf of another person.
When Jesus died on the cross, God demonstrated his love for you—once and for all. In effect, he was declaring, “I love you so much that I’m going to reveal the ultimate demonstration of love. I’m going to allow my precious child to die in your place.”
As a parent, this causes my breath to catch in my throat every time. Today, I gently ask you, how have you responded to God’s demonstration of love? Have you received his love by deciding to follow Jesus?
8. 2 Corinthians 8:9
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
Imagine a king leaving his throne to dwell among poor people and live with them—all because he wanted to reveal his love to them.
When Jesus left heaven’s throne room to dwell among us, he was offering a similar demonstration of love. We become rich when we receive his sacrifice on the cross as payment for our sins.
9. Hebrews 1:1-3
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.
Do you want to know what God is like? Look to Jesus. Open the Bible and read the Gospels.
Jesus is the perfect representation of our loving heavenly Father.
We can know God by reading his Word, aiming to follow Jesus, and drawing near to him in prayer.
10. Romans 8:38-39
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Last, these verses remind us that nothing can ever take the love of God away from us.
We cannot mess up too badly or fall too far. God’s love pursues us and will never leave us. We can find peace and hope in this truth.
