Overcoming Trials

8 Christmas Bible Verses About Peace and Joy

December rain falls cold and clear, washing away the mud-encrusted ice from children’s footprints.  I gaze at the scene from the window as I open my Bible in search of Christmas Bible verses about peace and joy.

Christmas Bible Verses About Peace and Joy

Christmas will be here soon, and our family could use a fresh outpouring of peace.

We’ve battled various viruses nonstop throughout the past several weeks, and we’re ready for a break as we celebrate with family and friends.  We’ve faced unexpected setbacks in many realms, and our joy has been tested through affliction.

Maybe you could use some joy and peace this Christmas as well.  Let’s look at eight Christmas Bible verses about peace and joy.

8 Christmas Bible Verses About Peace and Joy

1. Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Long before Jesus came to dwell among us, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah. He declared that the Messiah would come.  He would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

We can have peace at Christmas because Jesus has come to dwell among us.  He is our source of unending peace in a broken world.

2. Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Many religions glorify the gods they serve.  Yet Christianity is the only religion in which the One True God left his throne room in heaven to dwell among us.

Jesus experienced every human emotion and temptation.

He knows how it feels to walk in our shoes.

He bore the wrath of God when he took the punishment for our sins on the cross.

Jesus is Immanuel, God with us, and he has promised never to leave us.  He is our greatest source of peace.

3. John 1:14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John lived with Jesus when Jesus walked on earth.  He saw Jesus’ glory firsthand and witnessed the grace and truth of God through Jesus.  We have peace with God because Jesus restored our relationship with the Father.

4. Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Do you feel anxious this Christmas?

In his letter to the Philippian church, the Apostle Paul offered instructions on what to do in our anxious moments.  We are to present our troubles to God with thanksgiving.

As we cast our cares on God, his peace guards our hearts and minds.

5. Romans 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Before Jesus died on the cross, God’s people had to regularly make atonement for their sins by sacrificing animals.  God accepted these sacrifices as payment for their disobedience.

When Jesus died on the cross, he paid the price, once and for all, for the sins of all humankind.  Our role is to receive his forgiveness and commit to following him.  In doing so, we have peace with God through Jesus.

6. Psalm 34:14

Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

We discover greater peace when we turn away from evil, obey God, and follow him.

Are you seeking peace with every family member and friend this Christmas?  If not, what might God be leading you into?

7. Isaiah 54:10

“For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

God’s new covenant of peace was established through Jesus.  Furthermore, God’s compassion never fails.

No matter what you’re facing this Christmas, even if you feel as though your world has been turned upside down, God’s covenant of peace remains.  Seek him and you will find him.  He is already pursuing you.

8. 2 Corinthians 13:11

Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.

These admonishments are fitting for most of us at Christmas.  Aim for restoration in relationships.  Extend comfort to one another.  As much as possible, agree with one another and live in peace.

When we follow these teachings, we will find God’s love and peace this Christmas.
