Purposeful Living

5 New Year Prayer Points for a Fresh Start

I meander slowly through a forest encased in white.  Strangers’ footprints delineate the path through crusty layers that have thawed and frozen a dozen times.  I’m in the woods today to regroup and focus on the months ahead.  The New Year always feels like a fresh start.  Today, I invite you to join me as we explore five New Year prayer points to help us begin this year with focus and hope.

5 New Year Prayer Points for a Fresh Start

I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of picking a word, a verse, or a resolution for the New Year.  This year, as I stroll through the forest, I feel led to ask God to lead me to Spirit-inspired prayers for the New Year.

Regardless of what you’re facing, where you’ve been, and where you’re going this New Year, I invite you to pray over these New Year prayer points as you begin anew as well.

Transform Your Life With These New Year Prayer Points

1. Pray for deeper trust in God.

Here is a short prayer: “Father, help me trust you with the circumstances that don’t make sense to me this year.”

We can’t predict everything that will happen throughout the upcoming year.  However, we can all expect more than a few interruptions, surprises, and detours.

Let’s ask God to help us embrace these situations as opportunities to grow in faith and trust.  Let’s ask him to help us trust him when we don’t understand what he’s doing.  God will answer this prayer because he wants to help us grow in faith and trust.  Every challenging situation is an opportunity to grow in trust.

2.  Pray for a deeper awareness of God’s love for you.

Here is a prayer: “Father, lead me deeper into the awareness of your redemptive love for me.  I want to live from the foundation of this love.  Help me to be free to love others wholly, not needing their love or approval in return.  Help me to stand on my identity as your deeply loved child, which will free me to love others with greater purity.”

God’s love changes our hearts.  No matter how far we’ve ventured into the depths of his love, there is always a deeper layer.

As God’s love touches our hearts, we are healed.  Our lives are transformed.  Let’s ask God to lead us deeper into his transforming, healing, inspiring, and restoring love this year.  Our lives will never be the same.New Year Prayer Points

3. Pray for Jesus’ compassion toward others.

Here is a prayer, “Jesus, fill me with your compassion for the people you bring into my life.  Help me to be slow to judge and quick to see beneath the abrasive characteristics of others.  I want to be your vessel of love in this broken world.  Give me your heart for the people you place in my path.”

When Jesus lived on the earth, he was often moved with compassion for the needs surrounding him.  The compassionate love of Jesus will forever change us.  As he fills us with his compassion for others, we will be compelled to reach out and extend his love to them.

Throughout the upcoming year, we will most likely meet people who are difficult to cope with.  They might be coworkers, acquaintances, or even members of our own families.

Jesus wants to help us love these people.  He wants to fill us with compassion for them.

Ask Jesus to give you his compassion toward others.  He will work in your heart to fill you with his love, making you a conduit of his love, peace, and joy in this broken world.

4. Ask God to reveal himself as your Living Hope.

Here is a prayer, “Lord, when life is difficult and I feel tempted to put my hope in reaching the end of unpleasant circumstances, reveal yourself to me as my Living Hope.”

When life is difficult, it’s tempting to put our hope in making it to the other side of the trouble.

Instead, Jesus wants to be our Living Hope.  He wants us to put our hope in his presence with us instead of putting our hope in escaping our trials.  Ask God to help you find your hope in him.  This is a prayer he will answer.  He wants to be your Living Hope.

5. Pray for a surrendered heart.

Here is a prayer, “Lord, help me surrender to you.  I want to open my hands and let go of everything that’s keeping me from fully grabbing onto what you have for me.  Please help me to release my grip and align my heart with your purpose and calling for me.”

Have you been trying to kick down doors throughout the past year?

Are you frustrated because your dreams aren’t working out according to your expectations?

Most of us have faced disappointments throughout the past year.

Let’s pray for surrendered hearts. Pray for the willingness to walk through the doors God opens and walk away from the doors he closes.  Let’s pray that the Lord will align our hearts with his purpose and his calling for our lives.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
