Bible Verses About Habits and Healthy Rhythms

Let’s see what God’s Word says about habits and routines that will lead us closer to the Lord.

15 Bible Verses About Habits and Daily Rhythms

1. 1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.

Never forget that God has given you a body to care for and steward.  Meanwhile, your body is not your own.  You are a temple in which the Holy Spirit dwells.  Are you honoring God with your body?

Here are some healthy ways to honor God with your body:

Prioritize rest.  Get enough sleep at night.

Aim to eat in a way that fuels your body with healthy nutrition.

Avoid excess in food, alcohol, and in all areas of gratifying the flesh.

Prioritize medical care when needed.

Move your body through exercise and activity.

2. Psalm 5:3

Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

Beginning our days with God is the best way to start the day.

Before you climb from bed, make it a habit to greet God.  Thank him for a blessing.  Tell him good morning.  Repeat the words of this Psalm or another favorite verse.

3. Psalm 119:11

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

When we memorize God’s Word, he uses it to renew our minds.  We literally see the world differently!

Always be working to memorize Scripture.  This is one of the most vital habits you can cultivate!

4. Ephesians 4:22-24

To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

We all face the daily temptation to submit to the desires of our flesh.  The flesh refers to the part of us that is not submitted to Christ’s lordship.

Every morning, begin by committing to walking in the Spirit.  Ask God to help you stay in step with the Spirit instead of walking in the flesh.

5. 2 Peter 1:5-8

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This helpful passage teaches us the characteristics we should cultivate.

Begin your days by praying for these virtues to reign in your life.

6. 1 Corinthians 6:12

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

We all face times when it feels like we are being dominated by things of this world: money, sex, food, and other pleasures of the flesh.

We establish healthy habits when we commit to embracing only what is helpful.

7. Luke 9:23

If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Christ calls his followers to daily set aside their desires to follow him.

8. James 1:22-25

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

How do we become doers of the Word?

We must first spend time in the Word.  Make daily Bible reading a part of your regular rhythm.  Then, aim to act upon what you read.

9. 2 Timothy 1:7

For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

If you are a follower of Christ, he lives in you.  God has given you a spirit of power and self-control.  Speak this truth when you feel tempted to indulge in your bad habits.

10. James 1:14-15

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Remind yourself that sin gives birth to death.

Indulging in your habit might feel good in the moment, but it will not lead to the life you desire.15 Bible Verses About Habits

11. 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

At times, we fall into sinful habits because we tell ourselves, “I’ve already messed up.  I might as well continue.”

Instead of indulging in sinful behaviors after moments of failure, we find freedom when we confess our sins and ask God for the power to rise above temptation.

Make confession a daily habit, and God will use this discipline to transform your heart and life.

12. Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

We rise above sinful habits as we allow God to renew our minds.

God’s primary tool for renewing our minds is his written Word.  Speak the verses I am sharing with you today.   Memorize them.  Stand on them when you feel weak.  In the process, God will renew your mind.

13. 1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

God promises not to let us be tempted beyond what we can bear.

Do you feel tempted?  Look for a way out.  God has made the way.

14. James 4:7

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Satan tempts us to sin because he comes to steal, kill, and destroy.

Sinful behaviors are enticing, but they always cause destruction in our lives.  Remind yourself that when you resist temptation, Satan will eventually flee.

15. 1 Corinthians 10:31

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Lastly, aim to do everything for God’s glory.

He is always with you.  Ask him to help you live in a way that honors him.15 Bible Verses About Habits

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
