10 Prayers for Teachers This School Year
Over the years, the end of August has always marked the beginning of the new school year, a time filled with expectant prayers for teachers and students.
Twenty years ago, this time of year meant something very different to me than it does now. As a high school teacher, this season was filled with anticipation as I prepared my classroom for a new year.
Now that I’m no longer working in a classroom, the anticipation is different. As a mom, I scramble to make sure everyone in the house has what they need for the new year. The boys need at least a handful of unstained, untorn T-shirts, and we’ll try to start the year with relatively clean shoes. I’ve been busy filling my Amazon cart with three-ring binders, backpacks, socks, and clothing for our teen daughter.
Currently, two of our three children are transitioning into new school buildings. Our youngest will enter kindergarten, and our oldest will start high school. Emotions are running high in our home.
I’ve been praying for our kids every day, but this year, I feel a different nudge. It’s a strong inclination to pray for their teachers.
I encourage you to join me in praying for your children’s teachers and the teachers in your community with these ten prayers for teachers. Be sure to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you draw closer to God.

1. Ask God to encourage your children’s teachers.
“Lord, we pray you will encourage the hearts of our children’s teachers. Remind them of your purpose and your calling. Fill them with your love and surround them with others who will uplift and support them. Equip them for every good work you have prepared for them as they carry your love into their classrooms.”
2. Pray for wisdom.
“Father, thank you for the promise to give wisdom to those who ask for it. We ask you to fill our children’s teachers with your wisdom. Give them wisdom when they face challenging situations and conflicts with students, parents, and coworkers. Help them bear the fruit of the Spirit when difficulties arise. Guide them in making wise decisions.”
3. Ask God to give your children’s teachers his love for their students.
“God, thank you for the great love you have for each of us. We ask you to fill our children’s teachers with your love for them. From the overflow of your love for them, fill them with a supernatural love that goes beyond human understanding. Enable them to touch the hearts of their students and show sincere care as they create safe spaces for their students. Give them eyes to see into the struggles of their students by the power of your Spirit. Equip them to speak into these struggles with your words and your love.”
4. Pray that your children’s teachers will see their work as a calling from God.
“Lord, you know how easy it is for us to forget that our work is a calling from you. Please help our children’s teachers remember that you have called them to teach, impacting the next generation. Lift their heads when they feel discouraged. Give them hope when they are tempted to despair. Let them find joy in their calling, including a deep sense of purpose and fulfillment.”
5. Ask God to give your children’s teachers strength and patience.
“Father, we ask you to strengthen and equip our children’s teachers. Give them patience as they press into you in difficult moments. Uphold them when they feel weak. Protect their bodies from illness and give them sufficient rest at night. Surround them with your love and carry them when they feel weary. Reveal your power in their weakest moments, teaching them to rely on you and lean into you.”
6. Pray for God’s protection to surround your child’s teachers.
“Lord God, thank you for your promise never to leave us nor forsake us. We ask you to surround our children’s teachers with your protective embrace. Protect them from attacks of the enemy. Guard their families and their marriages as they undertake your holy work. Protect their minds and bodies and be their Shepherd.”
7. Pray for strong support systems to surround your child’s teachers.
“God, thank you for calling us into community with one another. We pray that no teacher will feel abandoned or alone. Show our children’s teachers where you have placed support systems to encourage and uplift them. Connect them with other teachers, staff, and friends who understand their calling and will offer inspiration and hope.”
8. Pray for creativity and inspiration.
“Dear Lord, you are the Master Creator. We ask you to fill our children’s teachers with the Holy Spirit so that they will follow your example. Fill them with creativity and inspiration. Equip them with creative ideas for reaching even the most difficult students, creative ways to use their time well, and inspiring ideas to help their students learn.”
9. Pray your children’s teachers will be drawn closer to God.
“Father, we pray that every difficult moment faced by our children’s teachers will draw them closer to you. For those who do not know you, Jesus, we pray you will bring believers into their lives who can point them to you. We pray for our teachers to come to saving faith in you, Jesus. For those who are believers, we ask you to draw their hearts closer to you, Father. Reveal yourself in new and profound ways and wrap them in your love.”
10. Pray for the balance between home and work.
“God, we ask you to give our children’s teachers wisdom as they aim to balance their lives. Help them find the balance between work, family, recreation, self-care, and the many commitments they juggle. Guide their decisions and free them from the guilt that comes when they are tempted to judge their worth by their performance as teachers, parents, spouses, friends, and other temporary roles. Help establish their identities in your unchanging love.”
