Has God Abandoned Me? 7 Promises for Your Hurting Heart
I awaken to the sound of wind rattling the windowpanes. Rain beats against the house like an intruder attempting to break through the walls, and I pray the old windowpanes can keep it at bay. When the storms of life rage, it’s easy to look to the ominous sky and ask, “Has God abandoned me to weather this storm all alone?”
Has God Abandoned Me?
Perhaps you know how it feels to cry out to God in your storm and find only silence.
Maybe you’ve been looking heavenward and wondering why God seems to have left you to navigate your storm without his help.
I’ve faced plenty of battles, but here’s what I’ve learned: God never abandons his children.
We find the promise that God will never leave us throughout Scripture. Today, we’ll look at these verses as we cling to the promise that God will never abandon us.
Instead of trusting our faltering feelings, when we feel abandoned by God, we can stand on the following promises.

The Bible makes it clear that God carries us through life’s storms and wants to comfort us with his love. I invite you to soak in these truths about God’s nearness. Also, be sure to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you experience God’s love and presence.
1. God will never leave you nor forsake you.
We find this promise in Deuteronomy 31:6, which reads, “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or in dread of them, for the Lord your God is the One who is going with you. He will not desert you or abandon you” (NASB).
2. God holds the power to use every trouble for good.
No matter how alone you feel, no matter how low this valley has taken you, God can use it. Here is your promise:
God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
3. You are not abandoned by God because nothing can separate you from his love.
Romans 8 reminds us that no power in the world can separate us from the love of God:
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).
4. No flood is too high, no river is too deep, no fire is too hot for God to carry you through.
Read this promise to God’s people from the prophet Isaiah and claim it for your life today:
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they will not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched,
Nor will the flame burn you (Isaiah 43:2).
5. Even when you ask, “Has God abandoned me?” God is offering you goodness.
Do you ever feel like God is withholding his best blessings from you? You can cling to this promise from Psalm 84:11:
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
The Lord gives grace and glory;
No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly (Ps. 84:11).
6. God is close to you when your heart is broken.
It’s not easy to navigate emotional pain without a sense of God’s presence. In these moments, we cling to what is true instead of clinging to what we feel.
Here is a promise to hold onto: God is close to those who are brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).
7. God has not abandoned you, and he demonstrated his love for you once and for all.
It’s easy to feel like God has abandoned us when we don’t sense his loving presence.
Let’s remember that his love is not merely something we feel.
God demonstrated his love at the cross.
You might not always feel God’s love. Nonetheless, his love is ever-present, regardless of your feelings.
Here is your promise: But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
Regardless of the struggle you are facing today, hold onto these promises. God has not abandoned you. He is calling you closer. He wants you to move deeper into his love. Let the following free online devotional book lead you closer to his heart.
