Today’s we’re sharing a devotion from our newly released book, God’s Warrior.  We invite you to take the journey with us.  I undertook the majority of the writing in each of these devotions, and Aiden and Caleb offered their insights in the section titled, “Words From a Fellow Warrior.”  Here are our thoughts on trusting God in tough times.

Trusting God in Tough Times

Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Have you ever gone camping or slept in a tent in your backyard?  This can be a blast, but it’s not fun when you wake up in the middle of the night, and everything is pitch black.  It’s even worse if you hear a creepy noise outside the tent or if you suddenly have to go to the bathroom.

Imagine stumbling from the tent into the darkness of night, unable to see what’s in front of you and trembling at the thought of bears or other creatures.

Sometimes life feels like an equally scary trek into darkness.  When hard things happen, we feel uncertain and afraid.  The good news is that we are never truly alone.  God promises to stay with us always, and he is in control.  We don’t have to be afraid in tough times because God knows the way, and he will lead us.

Our Key Verses today remind us that God doesn’t ask us to understand everything that happens to us in life.  Instead, he wants us to trust him—even when we don’t understand what’s happening.  When we trust him, he guides us and shows us what to do.

Truth to Stand on:

  • We all face difficult times in life, but God is with us to comfort and guide us.
  • We don’t have to fear the unknown because God is in control.
  • Nothing will happen to us that God does not permit, and he can use any situation for good.

Words From a Fellow Warrior:

When I think of tough times in my life, I think of when our pet chicken died.  I was sad, but God helped me through it.  God is always with us, and he can help us through sad times.  Caleb

Warrior Prayer:

Father God, thank you for the promise to stay with us always.  When life is hard, it’s easy to let fear guide us because we don’t understand what is happening.  Please help me learn to trust you during these difficult times instead of relying on my own understanding.  Help me remember that you are always working—even when I cannot see the ways you are working.

Talk About It:

  • Are you having trouble trusting God with something difficult right now? If so, describe the situation.
  • As you reflect on the past, can you identify any times when God helped you through hard situations? What did you learn?

Action Step:

Name your most challenging situation right now.  Then, take a moment to read Proverbs 3:5-6 out loud and make a declaration to trust God instead of trying to figure out what to do on your own.  Pray and ask God to help you learn to trust him every time this situation comes to mind.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
