Bible Truth for Everyday Life

15 Healing Scriptures for Physical and Spiritual Well-Being

The season’s first skiff of snow greeted us with the dawn this morning, and I thought of the places we’ve been and the things that have changed since we last woke to a wintry morning.  I pulled out my Bible in search of healing Scriptures to carry us into the new season.

Recently, a friend remarked that everything God permits in our lives is part of his plan to heal us.

I’ve been thinking about these words for days.  Every relational struggle, health crisis, financial setback, and difficult situation exists to heal us.  And the ultimate “healing” is that we will emerge looking more like Jesus.

As we reflect on these healing Scriptures today, let’s keep this truth in mind.

God works all things together for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28).  But this doesn’t mean everything will turn out well.  More accurately, it means we will emerge looking more like Jesus (Romans 8:29).

Healing Scriptures

What does God want to heal in your life today?

Reflect on this as we explore these healing Scriptures together.

15 Healing Scriptures for Physical and Spiritual Healing

1. Psalm 103:2-4, ESV

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy . . .

God is our great Healer.  He is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord Who Heals.

All healing comes from God, and it is God’s will for his children to be healed.

Sometimes, we seek him for healing, and it happens immediately.  At other times, we must wait for the healing because God will be glorified through the process.

We see this in the life and death of Lazarus.  It was for God’s glory that Lazarus was not immediately healed.  Instead, he died, and God received glory when Jesus resurrected him.

This takes on different forms in different situations, but we can trust that when God asks us to wait for his healing touch, he has a plan.  His plan is for our good and his glory.

2. James 5:14

Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

How should we respond when we need healing?

We should gather with others and pray for healing together.  God is glorified when we remain connected to one another.  We were designed to heal, both physically and spiritually, in community, not in isolation.

If you need healing today, ask others to join you in prayer for healing.  This is a step of faith, and God will honor it.

3. Psalm 30:2

Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.

Here, the psalmist thanks God for healing him.

This reminds us that when God heals us, we should not chalk it up to coincidence or the power of modern medicine.

God uses medicine, doctors, and divine encounters to heal us.  May we remember to thank him for his healing touch regardless of how the healing unfolds.

4. Proverbs 3:5-8

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

Proverbs 3:5-6 is a well-known passage.  It’s worth noting the next two verses.  We are called not to be wise in our own eyes, to fear the Lord, and turn from evil.

As we do so, this will bring us healing and refreshment.

5. Mark 5:34

And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

In Mark 5, a woman who has been bleeding for 12 years approaches Jesus, touches the hem of his garment, and is healed.

When we approach God for healing in faith, he is delighted to answer our prayer.

6. Mark 9:23

And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”

This statement came during the healing of a boy possessed by an evil spirit.  Jesus was teaching that faith can exist alongside personal struggle.

The faith of the boy’s father did not heal the boy; Jesus healed the boy in love and compassion.

Jesus’ healing power is not dependent upon anything we can do.  Our role is to come to him in trust, and when we are struggling to trust him, we can ask him to help us trust him more.15 Healing Scriptures

7. Psalm 119:50

This is my comfort in my affliction, that your promise gives me life.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible.  In this verse, the writer is honest about debilitating affliction and also points out that God’s promises bring comfort.

If your heart is heavy today, cling to God’s promises for life and hope.

Healing Scriptures for Spiritual and Emotional Well-Being

Let’s look at some more healing Scriptures for emotional and spiritual struggles.

8. 1 Peter 2:24

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

When Jesus died on the cross, he healed us from sin and death.  We are now seated with him in heavenly places, and every spiritual blessing already belongs to us.

In this sense, all followers of Jesus are already healed in every way.

In a different sense, while we live in our earthly bodies, we wait to see some of Jesus’ healing appropriated.  Our bodies break down.  We suffer with illnesses.  We can endure these ailments because we know they are temporary.

Our eternal inheritance is with Jesus, and we will have healthy, healed, whole bodies forever.

9. Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

Again, this verse reminds us that in Christ, we are already healed.

As we wait to see this healing come in fullness, we can thank him for being with us and carrying us through ailments and illnesses we face.

10. Psalm 147:3

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

God is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18).

Cling to this when you feel heartbroken and grieved.  God is with you.  He wants to heal your heart.  Press into his love and seek his comfort.

11. James 5:16

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

We find healing from sin by confessing our sins to others.  One reason for this is that confession brings our sins into the light, stripping them of their greatest power: shame.

When we share our brokenness with others, we realize we are not alone.  We all struggle.  We all sin.

By confessing our sins to one another and praying for one another, we are healed.15 Healing Scriptures

12. Proverbs 4:20-22

My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.

God’s Word heals.

As we hide it in our hearts, it renews our minds.  It changes the way we see the world around us.

Turn to God’s Word when you need healing.  He will supernaturally strengthen you and heal you through his Word.

13. 2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

These words were for ancient Israel, and they are also true for us today.

When we humble ourselves and admit that we need God, praying and seeking his face and turning from sin, he hears our prayers.  He forgives us and heals us.

14. Psalm 107:20

He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.

This verse also reminds us that God’s Word heals us.

If you need healing today, the Psalms are a good place to turn for healing from the Lord.

15. Psalm 41:4

As for me, I said, “O Lord, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you!”

Here, the psalmist turns to God in repentance.

When we repent, turning away from sin and turning toward God, he is eager to heal and cleanse us.

Apply These Healing Scriptures as You Pray

Let’s talk about how to turn to God in prayer for healing.

First, choose to turn to God in your pain instead of turning away from him.

Second, express your emotions with honesty and vulnerability.  Don’t try to protect God from your emotions.  He wants to help you.

Third, ask God to help you trust him.  He is waiting to answer this prayer.  Recognize that you probably won’t find immediate answers to your questions.  Instead, lamenting with God helps you lift your eyes to him and focus on him in difficult times.
