15 Bible Verses About God’s Mercy

God’s mercy is one of his primary attributes.   The Hebrew word for mercy is hesed.  It can also be translated as lovingkindness, steadfast love, or faithful love.

Hesed denotes relational love.  It is love in action.

With this in mind, let’s explore these Bible verses about God’s mercy.

Bible Verses About God’s Mercy

1. Ephesians 2:4-5, ESV

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—

God’s greatest act of mercy was sending his Son to receive the punishment we deserve for our sins.

Without redemption in Christ, we are dead in our sins.  However, when we receive Jesus as our Savior and Lord, we are alive in him through the mercy of God.

2. Psalm 86:5

For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Our God is a God of second chances.

When we fall short, he offers abundant opportunities to begin again.  He is patient and kind, pursuing us with love-in-action.

3. Lamentations 3:22-23

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

God’s mercies fall on us afresh every day.  He cannot be unfaithful because mercy and faithfulness are unchanging parts of his character.

Cling to this promise when life is difficult.  Every day is a new opportunity to begin again.  God is with you, and he pursues you with good gifts.15 Bible Verses About God's Mercy

4. Titus 3:5

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

We cannot do anything to earn God’s mercy.  God is merciful to us because it is in his character.  He cannot be anything other than good.

When we fail, we can remind ourselves that God’s mercy isn’t dependent upon our righteousness.  All we need to do is humble ourselves before God and receive his mercy.

5. Deuteronomy 4:31

For the Lord your God is a merciful God. He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.

This was a promise for God’s people as they followed him into the Promised Land.  He promised to be with them and care for them.  This promise is true for his children today as well.

God will never leave you.  He will be faithful to you when you are not faithful to him.

6. Psalm 23:6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

God is pursuing you today.

He is pursuing you through his Word and from these Bible verses about his mercy.

God is always pursuing you, and he has good gifts in his hands for you.  He wants to reveal his love-in-action to you.  He wants to bless you more abundantly than you could ask for or imagine.

7. Psalm 145:9

The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.

God extends his mercy to all of creation.  He is always demonstrating is love-in-action.

Recently, I listened to a message from a pastor who declared that every difficult circumstance of life is a vessel of healing in God’s hands.  God wants to use every hardship in our lives to help us become more like Jesus, healing and restoring us in the process.

Every difficult circumstance in your life is God's vessel of healing. #healing #faith #trust Share on X

8. 2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

In his mercy, God wants all people to come to saving faith in Jesus.

He is patient and kind toward us, extending opportunities for us to draw near to him and follow him.

9. Joel 2:12-14

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?

When we repent, turning away from sinful behaviors and turning toward God, he forgives and restores us.  We can never fall too far to be forgiven by God.

10. Isaiah 30:18

Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.

God wants to be gracious to us.  He looks for opportunities to extend his grace, working in our lives to accomplish what we cannot do for ourselves.

11. Deuteronomy 7:9

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,

God is faithful.

He keeps his promises to us even when we fail to keep our promises to him.

12. Psalm 103:11

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;

God’s love is too vast to understand or grasp.  It is higher than the heavens, abounding at all times, in all seasons.

Everything God does is done in love.15 Bible Verses About God's Mercy

13. Romans 5:8

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

God’s ultimate demonstration of love was sending his Son to die and receive the punishment we deserve.

14. Hosea 6:6

For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

Just as God is merciful to us, he wants us to be merciful to others.  He wants us to love him and love others and is not concerned about going through religious motions.

15. Psalm 118:1-4

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, “His steadfast love endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

God’s love will never fail.

Nothing can ever take it away from us, and it is the anchor of our identities.
