15 Encouraging Bible Verses for New Moms
A close friend recently had her first child. As I held her newborn and encouraged her, she said, “No one tells you how intense this is. And if they’d told you, you wouldn’t believe them anyway.” As the mother of three children, I understood completely. Today, I invite you to join me in the hospital room at the beginning of my motherhood journey, and I’ll share 15 comforting Bible verses for new moms.
If you are a new mom, 15 verses might feel like a lot. I’ve been there. I encourage you to read just one verse on this list. Let it carry you through the next 24 hours.
Come back tomorrow and read another verse. God is with you. He knows the joys and the challenges you are facing, and he wants to help you and carry you.
Motherhood will transform you like nothing you’ve ever experienced. You will also emerge looking more like Jesus.
Before we begin, I also invite you to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook for every weary woman. Now, join me in the hospital on the first full day of my motherhood journey.
Comforting Bible Verses for New Moms
Outside the hospital window, an apricot glow arises from behind the unclothed tree line. Dawn is coming. Today is my first full day as a mother, and I’m exhausted. I slept less than an hour last night and cannot move after yesterday’s emergency C-section.
Now, more than ever, I need God’s power to carry me in my weakness.
If I’m brutally honest, this all feels like too much.
As I hold our baby and kiss her fuzzy head, God reminds me of nine short words: “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10).
“Yes, Lord,” I whisper. “Please be my strength.”
As I reflect on the prayer, I know God is not asking me to equip myself for the calling of motherhood. He isn’t calling me to perfection or self-sufficient strength; more accurately, he is teaching me to trust him. He will give me all I needed to care for our child.
I don’t know it now, but this moment in the hospital will stay with me for decades.
I’ll hold it in my heart when this child in my arms goes to kindergarten and when she starts her freshman year of high school. I’ll remember it when her two brothers come along, when life is a wild and noisy endeavor, and when I can barely find time to take a shower.
God’s sufficiency in my weakness will be my anchor when my kids struggle in school, face life-threatening health concerns, and push me beyond my limits in countless ways.
Parenthood is hard, wearying work. But God is in it.
Soak in these Bible verses for new moms as you turn to him for strength.
Bible Verses for New Moms
1. 2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Becoming a mom is unlike anything you’ll ever experience. But your child is from God, and he will give you all you need to care for your child.
You don’t have to do this perfectly. In fact, you won’t be perfect. Do your best. Ask for help. Trust that God will reveal his strength in you when you feel weak. This is true now, and it will be true as your children grow into adults.
2. Romans 8:26
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
When I became a mom, I remember being too exhausted to find words to pray.
Weary mom, God sees you. He isn’t upset that you haven’t been to church or can’t find energy to read your Bible. He is carrying you, sustaining you. Lean into him and let the spiritual work of motherhood shape you.
The Holy Spirit prays for you when you don’t know how to pray for yourself.
3. Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
The Apostle Paul wrote this verse while he was imprisoned. Some people take these words out of context and use them as a mantra for chasing goals God never asked them to pursue. This was not its intended application.
This verse teaches that we can endure difficult situations because God gives us strength.
I hope motherhood is wonderful for you and far easier than you imagined. However, for most women, this is not the case. If you feel challenged and stretched by becoming a mom, cling to this: The God who brought life to this child has also equipped you to care for this child. He will help you.
4. Hebrews 4:16
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Keep talking to God.
He will help you adjust to motherhood. You can approach him boldly, with confidence. He will hear you and provide all you need for this calling.
5. Philippians 4:19
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
It might not feel like it, but God will give you the amount of rest you need to do this. He will give your body the strength to care for your child. He will stretch you, and stretching shapes us into the image of Christ.

6. Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Ask God for strength, and he will provide it.
It’s also worth noting that God gives us strength through other people. Offer others the opportunity to bless you by reaching out for help. Ask your mom, husband, aunt, grandma, or best friend to hold your little one so you can nap, eat, or shower.
We were designed to need one another, and moms need support.
7. Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
God will be with you through each step of your motherhood journey. You can trust that he is upholding you.
8. 1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
I suffered from postpartum anxiety after the births of all three of our children.
If you feel especially anxious or depressed, tell your doctor. These are common symptoms, and they can be treated.
Meanwhile, continue to cast your worries and cares on God. He cares for you and can lift these worries.
9. Psalm 73:26
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
God wants to reveal himself as your source of strength. Lean into his arms today.
10. Matthew 11:28
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Jesus invites the weary to draw near to him and rest. He is inviting you to lean into this rest today as well.
Bible Verses for New Moms Who Feel Worried or Anxious
Many new moms deal with worry and anxiety. We worry that our little ones aren’t getting enough nutrition and live in fear of SIDS. We lose sleep over everything from gurgling baby noises to diaper rash.
I wish I could hold your hand, dear mom, and tell you to breathe. Breathe deeply and slowly and trust that God holds the life of your baby in his hand. You can entrust your little one to him.
Here are some Bible verses for new moms who feel worried.
11. Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Talk to God about everything that’s making you anxious.
He wants to give you peace.
12. Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
My greatest fear for our little ones was the fear that they could suddenly die from suffocation, choking, or something out of my control.
After wrestling with this for a long time, God invited me to a deeper level of trust. I sensed him asking me to relinquish the lives of our kids into his hands. This meant praying a prayer similar to this:
“Lord, I recognize that I cannot control every aspect of this child’s life. I admit that I’m afraid of some tragedy stealing his life at a young age. Today, I relinquish this fear into your hands and realize that this is not mine to control. Help me be the best mom I can be without constantly worrying about something terrible happening. Help me learn to trust you more, knowing that even if the worst-case scenario were to happen, you would be with me and carry me through it.”
When I was able to pray this prayer and mean it, my life forever changed.
I’m now able to send our kids to school without excessively worrying about school shootings or terrible events taking place.
I can send them on mission trips across the country while trusting that their lives are in God’s hands, not mine.
This is true freedom.
If you can arrive at this place of relinquishment and trust while your children are young, you will save yourself years of stress and worry. I encourage you to start praying the above prayer (or a similar prayer) until your spirit comes into agreement with the words.
13. Psalm 56:3
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
This verse reiterates the message I shared above. It can also be a powerful truth to memorize and speak when you feel fearful or worried about your child.
14. Matthew 6:27
And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
A friend once said to me, “Why are you so worried? Most of what we worry about never happens anyway.”
We talked about this and also decided that even when our worries become reality, worrying was never helpful.
This is true for our children. Ask God to help you exchange worry for trust. This is a prayer he will answer.
15. Psalm 139:16, NIV
Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
Before our third child was born, we learned he had a heart defect.
I spent weeks worrying he would die. Worry consumed me.
Finally, God showed me that every day of our little boy’s life was already ordained. Worrying about him dying early would not change his ordained number of days.
Sweet mom, you can trust that the days for your child’s life are already written. Worrying about some horrific event will not change God’s plans; it will only steal your joy. Rest in God’s sovereignty over your child’s life. Let out a huge sigh of relief. And do your best to savor the moments as well as you can.
You won’t be able to savor every moment. But look for the good ones. They are woven into the tapestry of these long, wearying days.

I leave you with the best pieces of advice I received when I became a new mom.
1. Do what works for you.
You can read every baby book at the library and find hundreds of theories. I encourage you to do what works for you. Don’t get too caught up on following a plan perfectly.
Here are some examples from my life:
I once said I’d never co-sleep with a baby. When our daughter refused to sleep without being held, we co-slept for months. It was exhausting, but it was what I needed to do to endure the season.
I had visions of breastfeeding without ever supplementing. When my milk didn’t come in right away, I supplemented for the first week with all three of our children. They had no problem nursing afterward. I was far less stressed, and they were far less hungry. It’s okay to change your plan after becoming a parent if what you’re doing isn’t working.
Many close friends wanted natural births without medication. Six hours into labor, they changed their minds. It’s okay to change your mind on everything from anesthetics to feeding.
2. Ask for help.
Take sleeping shifts with your husband in the night.
Ask close loved ones to hold the baby in the day so you can nap.
Let the ladies from the church deliver meals.
3. Realize this will pass.
When our babies are young, we imagine we will never again sleep through the night or eat a meal with both hands.
I assure you that this is just a blip on the large screen of your life. It will pass. And you will emerge stronger, deeper, and more like Jesus. Keep taking it one day at a time.
