Bible Truth for Everyday Life

Encouraging Bible Passages for Hope and Courage

Winter writes a monochrome story in shades of gray.  I gaze out the window feeling defeated by a handful of discouraging situations, ranging from disappointments in my career to physical injuries that impact my everyday rhythms.  Pulling out my Bible, I decide to soak in God’s words as I seek encouraging Bible passages to speak into my circumstances.

We all deal with defeat.

Dreams don’t work out as we expected.

Medical issues sideline us for weeks, months, or years.

We lose loved ones for a myriad of reasons.

During these times, it’s easy to lose hope.  Meanwhile, God’s Word is an anchor.  Scripture is a source of hope for the hopeless, encouragement for the despairing.

Today, we’ll explore 15 short, encouraging Bible passages to lift our heads.  I also invite you to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you draw near to God and find hope in him.

15 Encouraging Bible Passages for Hope

Let’s see what God’s Word says about his faithfulness to us as we cling to the hope that can be found in him alone.

Encouraging Bible Passages for Any Situation

1. Joshua 1:9, ESV

Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Our greatest encouragement comes from the fact that no matter what we face, we don’t face it alone.  God is always with his children.

If you are a follower of Christ, God has promised never to leave you.  He will guide you.  He also uses adversity to shape us into his image.

Press into him today.  He wants to give you hope.

2. Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

We all face moments of weakness, moments when we wonder if we can carry on.

In these moments, God invites us to draw near to him.  He wants to reveal himself in our weakness.  Cry out to him and watch for him to sustain you with his powerful right hand.15 Encouraging Bible Passages for Hope

3. Romans 8:38-39

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When our kids were young, my husband and I established three core values for our family.  Our first core value is based on Romans 8:38-39: God loves us, and nothing can ever take his love away from us.

We can’t mess up in big enough ways for God to stop loving us.

No spiritual or temporal powers could ever take God’s love away from us.

As you press through this difficult time, remember that God pursues you with his love.  He is pursuing you through the words of this blog post right now.  He wants to help you find your strength in his love.

4. Zephaniah 3:17

The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.

God wants to quiet your restless heart with his love.

He sings over you as a loving father sings over his child in the night.

Rest in this for a moment.  When you feel anxious or discouraged, return to this image of the King of Kings singing over you, holding you.  He is with you, and he is mighty to save.

5. Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

No matter how dark the valley around you seems to be, God is with you.  You don’t need to fear evil because nothing will reach you without passing through him.

6. Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

God originally spoke these words to his people when they were exiles in Babylon.  They felt hopeless and wondered if they would ever return to their homeland.  God reminded them that his plans for them were good.  He wanted them to have hope.

God’s plans for you are also good.  You might not be able to see the good in the situation you are facing, but don’t give up.  God can turn around even the most difficult situations.

7. Romans 5:8

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

When life is difficult, it’s easy to doubt God’s love for us.

When I doubt God’s love, I remind myself that he demonstrated his love for me through the most extreme act imaginable: He sent his Son to die for us on the cross.

Most of us cannot imagine sending our children to die in the place of anyone else.  This would be the most extreme act of love a parent could ever display.  God displayed this love when Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins.

8. Luke 1:37

For nothing will be impossible with God . . .

It might feel like your situation will never improve.

Remind yourself that the same God who brought life to Mary’s womb through the power of the Holy Spirit can work in your life through the same power.

Nothing is impossible with him.

9. John 16:33

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

We will all face trouble in life.

But we can have courage and hope in troubled times because Jesus is with us.  He has overcome the world, and his power lives in us.

10. Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

The Apostle Paul wrote these words while he was imprisoned for sharing the gospel.  He wasn’t saying that we can accomplish any goal we set because Jesus gives us strength.  More accurately, he was declaring that he could endure any hardship because Jesus was with him.

Cling to this truth as you endure.  You can endure even the greatest hardships because Jesus will give you the strength to carry on.

11. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Relying on our own understanding can never lead to the peace and direction we desire.

God calls us to rely on him, seeking him in all things.  Sometimes, we simply cannot understand why we are suffering or facing challenges.  In these times, we turn to God, seek him, and trust that he will guide us.

12. Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Do you feel anxious today?

God is inviting you to draw near to him.  Thank him for being with you and loving you.

Directly ask him to meet your specific need.  Then, relinquish the situation to him.  Watch for his hand and trust that he is working even when you cannot see signs of his movement in your life.

13. Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

God works everything for the good of those who love them.  But let’s not stop here.  This verse isn’t saying that every situation will turn out great.  Verse 29 tells us that God’s idea of “working all things for good” is transforming us to look more like Jesus.

In other words, “God works all things together for the good of those who love him, and his idea of ‘good’ is shaping us to look like Jesus through adversity.”

14. Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Do you feel weak?

Remind yourself that even when your strength fails, God is your source of strength.  He will carry you and sustain you.

15. Psalm 54:4

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life.

All your days are in God’s hands.  Rest in this as you trust him to uphold you.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
