Prayers for the Nation: 10 Biblical Prayer Points

A few years ago, a friend shared a question she’d been asking God during her quiet moments with him: “God, what is on your heart today?”  Most of us focus on our personal needs when we draw near to God in prayer.  God wants us to pray for these needs.  He also wants us to come into alignment with him as we intercede for our nation and the world.  Today, we’ll look at 10 biblical prayers for the nation.

We are all called to be intercessors.  These prayers can help us have an outward focus as we pray for God’s guidance, healing, and divine intervention in the world.

I encourage you to pray in agreement with these prayers for the nation.

10 Prayers for the Nation

Let’s start by praying according to Scripture as we pray for our nation.

Prayers for the Nation

Prayer Point #1: Pray for our leaders to humble themselves in God’s presence.

Second Chronicles 7:14 begins with these words: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves” (ESV).

Jesus’ first words in the famous Sermon on the Mount were, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3, ESV).

All movement of God begins when God’s people humble themselves before him, recognizing our inability to save ourselves and submitting to God in weakness.

As we pray these prayers for the nation, let’s begin by praying for our leaders to humble themselves in God’s presence.

Prayer:

“Father, we acknowledge that apart from you, we can do nothing of eternal value.  Open the eyes of our national and global leaders to recognize their need for you.  Humble them through whatever means necessary so that they see their poverty of spirit and need for you.”

Prayer Point #2: Pray for our leaders to turn to Christ for salvation and leadership in their lives.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Pray for our leaders to see their need for salvation through Christ and turn to him with repentant, soft hearts.  Pray they will surrender their lives to Jesus and his lordship.

Prayer:

“Lord, we pray for the hearts of our national and global leaders.  As they realize their need for you, we pray they will turn to Jesus, receiving him as the Lord and Leader of their lives and committing to following him.”

Prayer Point #3: Pray for true repentance among our leaders to ignite national and global repentance.

In our first prayer point, we read the first part of 2 Chronicles 7:14.  Let’s draw our next prayer point from the second part of the verse, which is italicized here: “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Pray that our leaders will seek God and turn from evil so that God might hear from heaven and heal our land.

Prayer:

“God, thank you that you always hear the prayers of your people.  We pray for our national and global leaders to seek you earnestly, with their whole hearts.  We pray they will repent, turning away from sin and turning toward you in worship.  Please hear our prayers, forgive our sins, and heal our land.”

Prayer Point #4: Pray for God to guide our leaders.

Isaiah 30: 21 reads, “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

Pray that as our leaders seek God, they will hear from him and follow his guidance.

Prayer:

“Father, thank you for being so good to us and for your desire to guide our steps.  We pray our leaders will turn to you for divine guidance.  Align their hearts with your heart so that they are able to walk in your wisdom and fulfill your will on earth.”Prayers for the Nation

Prayer Point #5: Pray for unity among our leaders.

In his first letter, Peter wrote, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind” (1 Peter 3:8).

Pray that our leaders will be united.  Pray they will be filled with sympathy, compassion, brotherly love, tender hearts, and humble minds.

Prayer:

“Lord, please unite our leaders under your divine direction.  Give them sympathetic hearts toward others, desiring to use their gifts to help others, not exalt themselves.  Fill them with compassion, brotherly love, tenderness, and humility.”

Prayer Point #6: Pray for protection and peace.

Psalm 46:1 reads, “ God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Pray that God will protect our nation and bring us peace.

Prayer:

“Dear heavenly Father, we thank you for caring for us.  We pray for your protection over our nation: protection from natural disasters, wars, famines, and anything that might thwart your plans.  However, if these events must occur, we pray they will lead us into your arms, drawing us closer to you, thus fulfilling your divine purpose.”

Prayer Point #7: Pray for our nation to return to morality.

Galatians 5:16 reads, “But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Pray that we will turn to God, walk in the Spirit, and return to morality.  Pray for God to intervene amid the moral decline surrounding us, showing people that fulfillment is found through him alone and not in the empty cisterns of immoral living.

Prayer:

“Sovereign Lord, we pray our nation will return to morality.  Do whatever it takes to shake us and draw us from the moral decline surrounding us.  Change our hearts.  Help us turn to you for the satisfaction that can be found in you alone.”

Prayer Point #8: Pray that we will be faithful stewards of the assignments in front of us.

First Peter 4:10 reads, “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

Pray that we will be faithful stewards of the work God has placed in front of us.  We are called to use our talents and gifts to help and serve one another.  Pray we will fulfill this calling as individuals and as a nation.

Prayer:

“Dear God, thank you for the talents and gifts with which you have blessed us.  We recognize that these gifts are not our own; they are from you.  Help us to be good stewards of these gifts, using them to help others.  Guide our leaders to use the power you have given this nation to help others, not hurt them.”

Prayer Point #9: Pray for God to reveal his strength in our weakness.

Second Corinthians 12:9 reads, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Pray that our leaders will learn to turn to God in weakness.  Pray they will experience God’s power as they admit to their shortcomings and stand before the Lord in dependence.

Prayer:

“Father, thank you that your power is made perfect when we are weak.  We pray that our leaders will turn to you in moments of weakness and experience your divine guidance and strength as you reveal yourself in their weakness.  Humble us in your presence.  Show us that we are utterly dependent upon you.”

Prayer Point #10: Pray for a movement of worship to bring God’s kingdom to earth.

Romans 12:1 reads, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

Pray that God’s work in our nation will ultimately lead to a generation that lives to worship him.

We were created to worship God forever, both while we live on earth and when we spend eternity with him after this life.  Pray for a movement of worship to break out in the nation and the world.

Prayer:

“Father, thank you for designing us to worship you.  We pray you will move hearts and ignite a global movement of worship.  Draw your children together.  Humble your leaders.  Move our hearts to live in communion with you, offering our lives as spiritual acts of worship.”
