The Warrior’s Prayer & 8 Ways to Put on the Armor of God
“What would you do differently if fear weren’t a factor?” a friend asked as we talked about our lives. The question lingered in my mind for months. Every time I felt fear arise within me, I considered her question. During that time, I also discovered a prayer that changed the way I perceived fear: the Warrior’s Prayer by Dr. David Jeremiah.
The Warrior’s Prayer is a powerful prayer from Ephesians 6, which describes the “Armor of God.”
For years, I heard Christians talk about “putting on the armor.” I knew the words of Ephesians 6, but I wasn’t sure how to “put on the armor.”
Praying the Warrior’s Prayer is an excellent way to step into the armor of God at the start of each new day. Like any prayer, when we pray these words with engaged, expectant, believing hearts, God empowers us for the battles in front of us.
Let’s begin by praying the Warrior’s Prayer. Then, we’ll take a closer look at each piece of the Armor of God.
The Warrior’s Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Your warrior prepares for battle.
Today I claim victory over Satan by putting on
the whole Armor of God!
I put on the Girdle of Truth!
May I stand firm in the truth of your Word so
I will not be victim to Satan’s lies.
I put on the Breastplate of Righteousness!
May it guard my heart from evil so I will
remain pure and holy, protected under
the blood of Jesus Christ.
I put on the Shoes of Peace!
May I stand firm in the Good News of the
Gospel so Your peace will shine through me
and be a light to all I encounter.
I take the Shield of Faith!
May I be ready for Satan’s fiery darts of
doubt, denial, and deceit so I will not be
vulnerable to spiritual defeat.
I put on the Helmet of Salvation!
May I keep my mind focused on You so Satan
will not have a stronghold on my thoughts.
I take the Sword of the Spirit!
May the two-edged sword of Your Word
be ready in my hands so I can expose
the tempting words of Satan.
By faith, your warrior has
put on the whole armor of God
I am prepared to live this day in
spiritual victory! Amen.
Applying the Warrior’s Prayer to Daily Life
Now that we’ve prayed this prayer, let’s take a closer look at the armor of God and consider the Apostle Paul’s instructions in Ephesians 6. Let’s start by examining this passage of Scripture.
Ephesians 6:10-18, ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.
16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. . .
How to Put on the Armor: Applying the Warrior’s Prayer
1. Turn to God for strength.
Ephesians 6:10 tells us to be strong in the Lord.
We are not to find our strength through self-effort our human ability. God wants to be our source of strength.
The first step for putting on the armor of God is asking God to help us humbly set aside human striving and turn to him for strength.
2. Recognize the spiritual realm.
Life’s battles typically seem to be physical. We feel like we’re battling against world systems, diseases, and other people.
Meanwhile, Ephesians 6 reminds us that our battles are spiritual. Every force that works in this world to steal, kill, and destroy is from Satan (John 10:10). When we see death and destruction, we can be assured that we are fighting spiritual battles.
This helps us step back and realize that other people aren’t our enemies. Satan is our enemy, and he prowls around the earth looking for people to devour. We resist him by standing firm in the armor of God.
3. Anchor yourself in the truth of God’s Word.
Verse 14 tells us to put on the belt of truth.
Just as a belt provides stability, truth is a stabilizing and centering force in our lives. God’s Word is Truth. When his truth is our anchor, we find victory against the enemy.
One of Satan’s primary battle tactics is deception. He whispers lies to pull us away from God:
Overindulgence will bring comfort.
More money will bring joy.
Perfectionism will make me powerful.
We stand against these lies by anchoring ourselves with the belt of truth.
4. Guard yourself with the breastplate of righteousness.
Just as a soldier’s breastplate guards his heart, Jesus’ righteousness protects our hearts from the enemy’s lies. Another common strategy of Satan is accusing us with lies about who we are, flinging arrows of shame and condemnation.
When we guard ourselves with Christ’s righteousness, we deflect these arrows. We know that all who have received Christ are not condemned (Romans 8:1). There is no shame in Christ.
5. Prepare your feet with the gospel of peace.
Verse 15 tells us to fit our feet with the gospel of peace. The gospel is the good news that Jesus came to earth and bore the punishment we deserve when he died on the cross for our sins. Because of Jesus, we have peace with God.
This peace helps us stand firm in the Lord. We are also to carry this peace to others by sharing the gospel with them.
6. Take up the shield of faith.
Verse 16 tells us to take up the shield of faith and extinguish the arrows of the enemy.
The enemy attacks us with flaming arrows of fear, doubt, worry, and other lies. The shield of faith extinguishes these attacks when we lift it up and declare, “I refuse to receive these lies. I trust God.”
7. Protect your mind with the helmet of salvation.
In verse 17a, the helmet of salvation protects our minds.
Confidence in our eternal security with God protects us from being led astray by the enemy.
8. Use the sword of the Spirit.
Verse 17b refers to the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
This is the only offensive weapon in the armor.
We can defeat the enemy by speaking the Word of God. Jesus demonstrated this when he spoke Scripture to Satan in the wilderness. When we sense we are under spiritual attack, we can fight back by speaking God’s Word to the lies.

Let’s return to the question my friend asked me: “What would you do differently if fear were not a factor?”
This is a good question for us all to ask ourselves. Fear is never from God. When we feel fear, we can step into the armor of God, pray the Warrior’s Prayer, and face fear directly. God will be faithful to guide us.
God has guided me as I’ve pressed through fear, and I’ve been intentionally aiming to rise above fear. This has led to joy, peace, and a sense of purpose I could never find when fear directed my decisions.
