For When You Need God’s Guidance: The Pillar of Cloud and Fire
“I wish God would make the way clear like he did with the pillar cloud of fire,” I said to a friend as we talked about finding God’s direction.
“I’ve had the same thought,” she agreed. “But I’ve also realized he’s given us something better. The pillar of fire didn’t go away. It came to dwell within us.”
“That’s a remarkable way of looking at it,” I reacted.
When God’s people wandered in the wilderness on their journey to the Promised Land, God led them with a pillar cloud of fire. The fire guided them at night, and a cloud guided them by day.
God’s guidance was unmistakable and straightforward. His people needed only to follow the signs in the sky.
When the cloud or pillar stopped, they stopped. When the cloud or pillar moved, they followed.
The Pillar Cloud of Fire
The cloud and the pillar of fire offered fare more than guidance. The cloud gave protection from the hot sun during the day, and the fire gave warmth, light, and protection in the cold, dark night.
When I made the comment to my friend, I was trying to determine what my next season of life would look like. I was having a tough time discerning God’s direction. I wanted visible signs, a blueprint.
My friend reminded me that God had given me something better: His presence living within me to guide me.
Today, we’ll look at the symbolism in pillar cloud of fire as we consider the fulfillment in Christ under the New Covenant. I also invite you to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you start a habit of drawing near to God and encountering his presence daily.
Symbolism in the Pillar Cloud of Fire
Here are five symbols in the pillar cloud of fire as well their fulfillment for all followers of Christ.
God’s Presence
The pillar carried God’s presence as he guided his people.
Under the New Covenant, anyone who receives Jesus as Savior also receives the Holy Spirit. In the Holy Spirit, God’s presence comes to dwell within us.
The pillar cloud of fire astonishingly moved from an outward sign of God’s presence to an inward, indwelling Spirit. God does not guide us from afar; he guides us from within. This leads to our next point.
God’s Guidance
Under the New Covenant, God’s guidance transformed from visible movement to inner leading.
We are no longer following a route. We follow the presence of the Living God as he guides us using conviction, wisdom, peace, and the illumination of Scripture.
Our Shepherd leads us along the right paths in life, and he also shepherds our souls.
God’s Protection
The pillar cloud of fire protected God’s people by night. The cloud protected them from the sun in the day.
In Jesus, God came to dwell among us. He is Emmanuel, God With Us, and he promises never to leave us.
The pillar cloud of fire reminds us that nothing reaches us without passing through God’s protective arms first. We are secure because his presence is with us always.
God’s Light
The pillar cloud of fire made the darkness navigable even at night. The people didn’t stop moving until the pillar of fire stopped.
In a similar way, Christ’s light makes the darkness of our lives navigable. Even more, this light is not outside us. It is within us. Christ shines through us. He also gives us just enough light for the next step of the journey.
God’s Holiness
Fire is untouchable. In a similar way, God is holy and pure.
When God’s presence comes to dwell within us through the Holy Spirit, he shapes us from the inside out. We are transformed into the image of Christ.
God Didn’t Remove the Fire
God has not removed the holy fire of his presence; he has moved the fire within us.
This is a remarkable truth.
God’s presence has shifted from local, visible, and corporate to indwelling, personal, and intimate. God is with us, guiding us from within.
Meanwhile, it’s easy to become so caught up in life that we overlook God’s presence with us.
Let’s look at several ways to become more aware of the indwelling presence of God with us.
4 Ways to Become More Aware of God’s Presence
1. Put presence before production.
Trying to accomplish as much as possible within my days generally steals my peace and leads me to stop looking to God. Productivity becomes an idol. I fail to notice God’s hand because I’m so busy thinking about the next task.
If you struggle with this as well, aim to be present in your moments instead of aiming for production. Slow down.
Enjoy the people God places in front of you.
Focus on being mindful in your moments instead of accomplishing more. In doing so, you will become more aware of God’s presence with you.
2. Become more aware of God’s presence by completing one task at a time.
Many of us are good at multitasking. We pride ourselves on being able to talk on the phone, pay our bills, prepare meals, and help with homework at the same time.
Multitasking is a peace-stealer. It also pulls us away from focusing on the Lord.
I’ve learned that when I try my best not to complete multiple tasks at one time, I’m more in tune with what God is doing. My mind is open to listening for his still small voice and experiencing his gentle guidance.
3. Aim to be present in your moments instead of thinking about the future.
We should make plans. However, when our plans lead us to focus only on the future, we fail to be fully engaged in the present.
If you’ve ever planned for a big event, you know about this struggle. As you plan for the event, it consumes your thoughts. You realize that you’re not paying attention to the people God is placing in front of you in the present because you’re so worried about the future.
The fruit of living present in our moments is a greater awareness of God’s presence, and when I’m more aware of God’s presence, there is room in my heart and mind to encounter the One who is Peace.
4. Create space to savor life.
It takes work to create space to savor life, but if we don’t do the work, we might just miss the greatest of gifts of all.
The scent of waffles in the iron on a snowy winter morning.
The sound of children laughing.
Muddy footprints across the otherwise clean tile.
Bouquets of colorful flowers on our tables.
Bitter cold mornings with frost on the spindly arms of the oaks.
Cardinals at the birdfeeder.
If we’re not careful, our everyday moments will slip through our fingertips, and we’ll look back to realize we missed the best of God’s gifts: his presence with us.
