15 Spiritual Warfare Scriptures for the Battles of Life

The atmosphere within our home had been tense for days.  Everyone was touchy, and it felt like a dark cloud loomed over our family.  On a clear winter morning, I opened my Bible and began speaking a list of spiritual warfare Scriptures over our family.

Reminding myself that God’s Word is the only offensive weapon against Satan’s attacks, I spoke his Word and stood on his promises.

Nothing startling happened; however, over the course of the next few days, peace returned.  The experience was a reminder that the battles we face in our everyday lives are not merely battles against flesh and blood.  There are battles in the spiritual realm surrounding us.

We fight these battles by standing on God’s Word: speaking Scripture, meditating on it, and pushing back against the darkness with it.

No matter what kind of battle you’re facing today, here are 15 spiritual warfare Scriptures to speak and stand on.

15 Spiritual Warfare Scriptures for Life’s Battles

1. Ephesians 6:12 ESV

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Today, we’ll look at several verses from Paul’s letter to the Ephesian church.  In the sixth chapter of this book, Paul directly states the source of the struggles we often face in life.  We aren’t merely facing temporal forces; battles are constantly taking place in the spiritual realm surrounding us.

The spiritual realm is just as real as the temporal realm, even though we usually can’t see the spiritual realm with our human eyes.

This is important to remember.

Dear friend, the battle you are fighting today might feel like it’s against your boss, your former friend, your elderly relative, or your spouse.

Other people are never our enemies.  Satan is our enemy, and he aims to destroy us through any means possible.  When we see destructive forces in our lives, we can be sure he is at work.

2. Ephesians 6:10-11

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 

The first way we fight back against spiritual attacks is to put on the armor of God.

Keep reading, and we’ll look at the pieces of this armor later in this post.

3. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ . . .

One of the most subtle spiritual battlefields is the battlefield of the mind.

Satan attacks us with thoughts that don’t align with God’s Truth: fear, temptation, worry, doubt, and other destructive thoughts.

For this reason, we need to learn to take our thoughts captive, not giving them free reign in our minds.  As we think about what we are thinking about, we fight the enemy’s attacks with godly thoughts.

This leads to our next verse.

4. Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

We learn to think godly thoughts by allowing God to transform our minds.  God’s primary tool for transforming our minds is the Bible.

As we study, memorize, read, and meditate on the Bible, our perspectives change.  We begin to see the world as God sees it.  We come into alignment with him.

Throughout this process, we learn to discern thoughts that don’t line up with God’s thoughts and push them out of our minds, replacing them with his biblical truth.

5. Revelation 12:11

And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.

The book of Revelation is a combination of warnings to early churches who had strayed from God and apocalyptic prophecies about the End Times.

This verse tells us that we overcome Satan by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus, and the word of our testimonies.

We cannot find victory in spiritual battles unless we have received Jesus and surrendered to his leadership in our lives.  Once we have received Christ, his authority lives in us.

Jesus stands in authority over Satan and every created being (Matthew 28:18).  He gives us this authority when we receive him.  We don’t need to fear Satan or his demons because we have the authority of Jesus to rebuke them.

We will discuss this more shortly.

6. 1 Peter 5:8

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Meanwhile, Satan prowls around the earth looking for people to destroy.

For this reason, we need to be on guard: not fearful, but aware.

7. 1 Peter 5:9

Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

We resist Satan by not giving into temptation, speaking God’s Truth in the face of fear, taking our thoughts captive, and putting into practice the other encouragements on this list.

8. Genesis 3:1

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

One of Satan’s primary tactics is nudging us to question God’s truth and his goodness.

He deceived Eve by prompting her to doubt God’s words.

This is how he deceives us as well.

9. Ephesians 6:13

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

Let’s return to Ephesians 6 for some practical advice about overcoming spiritual attacks.

10. Ephesians 6:16

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one . . .

Faith is a shield.

It can be helpful to think of faith as trust in God.

When we trust God, we can hold up this trust in the face of Satan’s attacks.

Satan says, “This will never get better.  You should give up.  You’re a failure.  God will let you down.  You can’t trust God.”

The lies go on and on, all encouraging us to turn away from God and give up on our callings.

Meanwhile, we are to block these lies with our deep trust in God, anchored to the fact that God can only be good and loving.  When we trust him unconditionally, the lies lose their power over us.

11. Ephesians 6:17

and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God . . .

The “helmet of salvation” protects us from the enemy’s lies about who we are as children of God.

The sword of the Spirit, the only offensive weapon in the armor, is used to combat the lies of the enemy.  When we speak the Word, he must submit to the authority of the Word.

12. Ephesians 6:18

praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints . . .

We also overcome spiritual attacks by praying and asking God for help.

He is always with us, always waiting to help us.

13. Hebrews 2:14

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil . . .

Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, he won the war against Satan, sin, and death.

Until he returns, we continue to fight spiritual battles, but it helps to remember that the war is won.

Satan’s final story is written, as we’ll see below.

14. Jude 1:9

But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

What do we say when we sense we are facing a spiritual attack?

We can simply say, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan.”

When our children were young and felt fearful in the night, I reminded them to speak one simple Word, the name with all authority over darkness: “Jesus.”

15. Revelation 20:10

And the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

One day, Satan will be thrown into a lake of fire and sulfur, where he will suffer forever.

God will create a new earth, and the enemy will be banished forever.

Until that day, we stand firm by standing on God’s Word and walking in Jesus’ authority.

Let’s review a few practical steps for fighting spiritual battles.

Applications of These Spiritual Warfare Scriptures

1. Spend time in Scripture.

Read it.

Meditate on it.

Speak it out loud.

Memorize it.

God’s Word is our primary weapon against the enemy’s attacks.

2. Acknowledge the spiritual realm.

Pause to remind yourself that your circumstances (and other people) are not your enemy.

Satan is your enemy, and he aims to discourage, distract, and defeat you.

3. Stand in Jesus’ authority.

Refuse to be intimidated.

If you are a follower of Christ, you have his authority.

Rebuke the enemy out loud in the authority of Jesus.  Command him to leave you in Jesus’ name.  Watch the atmosphere shift.

4. Surround yourself with worship.

Listen to worship music.

Worship by singing.

Worship takes our eyes off the battle and fixes them where they belong, on Jesus.

5. Don’t fight alone.

Find some friends who will pray for you and speak truth to you.

We all need friends in life’s spiritual battles.

6. Resist the devil

Resist Satan by taking thoughts captive, holding up the shield of faith, and practicing the steps we studied in today’s spiritual warfare Scriptures.

7. Don’t give up.

Most of all, don’t give up or lose hope.

God is with you.  He will never leave you.  He promises to give us all we need to walk with him.  Cling to this promise.
