Moses’ Songs in the Bible: Portraits of God’s Character
Moses is traditionally credited with three songs in the Bible. The Song of the Sea is found in Exodus 15:1-18. The Song of Moses is in Deuteronomy 32:1-43. Psalm 90 is titled “A Prayer of Moses.” Today, we’ll begin by exploring similarities between Moses’ songs in the Bible.
Then, we’ll take a closer look at Moses’ Song in Deuteronomy.

Let’s begin by exploring Moses’ songs in the Bible.
Moses’ Songs in the Bible
All three of Moses’ songs in the Bible are poetic songs of worship. They are written in Hebrew poetic form and are prayers or songs directed toward God.
These songs each exalt God as eternal, powerful, and supreme over all creation. They also focus on God as deliverer and judge.
Exodus 15 celebrates God’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt.
Deuteronomy 32 warns Israel about covenant faithfulness.
Psalm 90 reflects on God’s eternal nature as well as human dependence on him.
All three songs also contrast God’s faithfulness with human frailty. They also appeared at pivotal moments in Israel’s history: after the exodus from Egypt; at the end of Moses’ life; and as a reflective prayer.
As we read Moses’ songs in the Bible, we can reflect on our human weakness and God’s eternal power, which is made perfect in our weakness.
Let’s now break Moses’ Song in Deuteronomy 32 into sections as we consider what this song can teach us about God.
Moses’ Song in Deuteronomy 32
Deuteronomy 32:1-43 is Moses’ final song before his death on Mount Nebo. This song served as a warning of what would happen if God’s people turned away from him after entering the Promised Land. It also outlined God’s character and mercy.
Let’s break this song into sections for a closer look.
Section One: The Faithful Rock (verses 1-4)
“Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth” (verse 1, NASB).
These verses outline God’s trustworthiness.
God is stable and dependable. Knowing this sets the foundation for the rest of the song. When we know who God is, we can trust him through even the most adverse circumstances.
God’s Word is refreshing, like dew on fresh grass. God is our Rock, and all he does is perfect.
These are powerful verses for us to meditate on when life is challenging. God is always faithful, and we can trust him.
Section Two: The Human Tendency to Drift (verses 5-18)
“They have acted corruptly against Him,
They are not His children, because of their defect” (verse 5).
“You forgot the Rock who fathered you,
And forgot the God who gave you birth” (verse 18).
This section addresses Israel’s experience of drifting away from God. Drifting always begins with forgetfulness. We forget who God is and turn to lesser gods.
Israel “forgot the Rock who fathered them.”
These verses are a somber reminder that privilege does not prevent rebellion. We all need to guard our hearts and resist sin. When we grow arrogant, declaring that certain sins are “beneath us,” we are most susceptible to falling.
Section Three: God’s Discipline (verses 19-33)
“Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them,
I will see what their end will be;
For they are a perverse generation,
Sons in whom there is no faithfulness'” (verse 20).
Section Three addresses God’s discipline. Sin has consequences.
Here, we see God responding to Israel’s sin with anger. He warns them of national trouble, foreign oppression, and exile.
This section might seem harsh to us today, but God’s character has not changed. The God of the Old Testament is also the God of the New Testament.
When God seems harsh, we should remind ourselves that discipline is not abandonment; it is loving correction, showing God’s presence, not his absence.
Furthermore, under the New Covenant, God’s discipline is never punitive. It is always corrective.
God’s wrath was fully fulfilled when he poured it out on Jesus on the cross. God does not punish us; rather, he disciplines us in love, to redirect us. This discipline is in love, and it is always for our well-being.
Section Four: God’s Justice and Compassion (verses 34-43)
“For the Lord will vindicate His people,
And will have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free” (verse 36).
In the last section of Moses’ Song, God makes clear that he will judge Israel’s enemies. God wounds, but he also heals.
The following principle was true for Israel, and it is true for us today: When we return to God with repentant hearts, God restores us.
He also executes justice against those who harm his children. We don’t need to seek vengeance because God pursues it for us.
What can we take away from the Songs of Moses in the Bible, particularly the song in Deuteronomy 32?
God is the Rock upon which our feet are planted. He is a firm foundation. When we try to find security apart from him, we will always be disappointed.
God also disciplines us because he is a good Father. During these times, our role is repentance. We turn away from sin and turn toward God. In response, he heals us and restores us.
