Othniel: 8 Applicable Lessons From Israel’s First Judge

The book of Judges describes the events that took place after Joshua’s death.  The tribes of Israel began taking possession of the land, and judges were appointed to lead them.  Othniel was Israel’s first judge.

Othniel was a relative of Caleb, who had given a favorable report of the Promised Land after exploring it as a spy.  As Israel moved into the land and began conquering it, Othniel proved his courage by capturing the city of Kriath-sepher.  As a reward, Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah in marriage (Judges 1:12-13).

A pattern was set in motion as Othniel began serving Israel as a judge and leader.

This pattern would continue throughout the time of the judges: Israel fell under sin without strong leadership.  They were then oppressed by foreign nations.  God then raised up judges to lead them to repentance and deliverance from foreign oppression.  They lived in peace for a time, before eventually falling away from God again.

Othniel: 8 Lessons for Us Today

We don’t know much about Othniel from the Bible, but we do know that Israel enjoyed peace under his leadership.

Let’s look at some key points from his life.

Lessons From Othniel

1. God wants to be our source of strength.

Othniel means “Lion of God” or “God is My Strength.”

This name is a reminder that God empowers those who rely on him.Othniel: Israel's First Judge Offers Lessons for Us Today

2. Faith grows where it is honored.

Othniel was a close relative of Caleb, a man of great faith.  When Caleb and Joshua returned with the spies from scouting out the land of Canaan, they encouraged the people to take the land.  Caleb repeatedly reminded Israel that God would be with them.

Our faith is an example for others, just as Caleb’s faith was an example for Othniel.

The fruit of our faith can extend to generations beyond us.

3. God prepares leaders through tests.

Before becoming a judge, Othniel proved his courage by capturing Kriath-sepher.

He was faithful in this battle; therefore, God entrusted him with a larger one, leading a nation.

4. Spiritual victory is Spirit-empowered.

Judges 3:10 reads, “the Spirit of the Lord came upon him.”

Othniel was empowered by the Holy Spirit for the task of leading God’s people.  In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit intermittently filled people who had been called to special leadership roles.

Under the New Covenant, all followers of Christ are filled with the Holy Spirit.  This is a remarkable truth.  We are all capable of spiritual victory when we follow Jesus.

5. God hears our cries.

Israel had fallen into sin and oppression, but when they cried out to God, he responded by raising Othniel.

Even after we’ve failed, repentance opens the door for God’s rescue.

6. One obedient life can bring peace and stability to many others.

After Othniel delivered Israel and became judge, they had peace for 40 years.

We don’t know much about these years, only that Othniel’s leadership brought faithful stability.  In a similar way, when we obey God, our lives can touch others, leading them to the peace that can only be found in Christ.

7. Without continued devotion to God, spiritual decline is inevitable.

Othniel appears at the beginning of a cycle that repeats throughout Judges: sin, oppression, repentance, deliverance, and peace.

This cycle can take place in our lives as well.  It looks different than it looked in Judges, but the principle is the same.  When we live in habitual, intentional sin, we are oppressed and bound by that sin.  Repentance always brings deliverance and peace.

8. Every deliverer in Judges points to the need for an ultimate Deliverer.

Othniel was raised up by God and empowered by the Spirit to deliver God’s people.

Later, Jesus was sent by God and filled with the Spirit to deliver all humanity from sin and death.
