Transformation

10 Life-Changing Bible Verses About Being Transformed

For years, I kept a photo of a monarch butterfly on my mirror.  Beneath the photo, the following words offered a daily reminder: “You are a new creation in Christ.”  These words, from 2 Corinthians 5:17, make up one of many life-altering Bible verses about being transformed.

A friend gave me the photo shortly after I decided to follow Jesus.  It was a reminder that my old life was behind me.  Every time I looked at the card, I reminded myself that I was a new creation in Christ, and the sins of my past were washed away by the blood of Christ.

More than a decade later, I became a mother, and our daughter, Bekah, started raising butterflies.  She loved collecting tiny caterpillars on milkweed plants and watching them progress through their life cycles until they turned into butterflies.

I thought about the card my friend gave me as I watched Bekah’s beautiful monarch butterflies spread their wings and flutter into the sapphire sky.  In the span of a few short weeks, the marvelous creatures transformed from tiny caterpillars into strong, colorful butterflies.  They seemed to become new creatures in front of our eyes.

Like monarch caterpillars, God wants to transform our lives so that we look like new creations after deciding to follow Jesus.  He also reminds us that our old ways and lifestyle choices are behind us.  We have been redeemed and made new.

10 Bible Verses About Being Transformed by God

1. Romans 12:2, ESV

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

God transforms us by renewing our minds.  His primary tool for renewing our minds is his written Word.  We are transformed by God by reading, studying, meditating on, and memorizing God’s Word.  This leads to our next verse.

2. 2 Corinthians 3:18

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

In his second letter to the Corinthian church, Paul described how this transformation takes place: gazing on the glory of Jesus.

We gaze on Jesus’ glory when we spend time reading God’s Word, marveling at his goodness and glory.  We gaze on the glory of Jesus when we praise him for his created world, thank him for his blessings, and worship him in spirit and truth.

3. 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

We all commit sins, but God is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us when we confess our sins to him.  There is no condemnation, guilt, or shame for those who have received Jesus.  As we confess our sins to God, he transforms us and renews us.

4. Colossians 3:16

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

We are transformed when the Word of Christ dwells in us richly, when we do more than skimming the text, but let it sink into the marrow of our bones.  When this happens, we overflow with God’s love, which leads to immense gratitude.

5. Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Our thoughts matter.  Because transformation happens in the mind, we align ourselves with God’s transforming power when we take our thoughts captive.  We are to dwell on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, excellent, and praiseworthy.

6. Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

When we decide to follow Christ, our former selves are nailed to the cross with him.  Christ comes to live in us, empowering us and changing us.  We still wage war against our old sinful nature, but we can find victory because the Holy Spirit dwells within us.

7. 1 Corinthians 9:27

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

Every day, a battle rages within us.  Our flesh, the part of us that is ruled by our sinful human nature, wants to serve its selfish desires.  Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit resides within us, guiding us to lives of wholeness and peace.  We must discipline our bodies so that we follow the guidance of the Spirit, not the flesh.

8. John 14:23

If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

Our lives are transformed when our love for God leads to obedience.

When my life lacks the transformation I desire, I ask myself if I am allowing sin to remain unchecked in my life.  If I identify and area of sin, I repent and ask God to help me obey him.10 Bible Verses About Being Transformed

9. Galatians 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

God has given us everything we need to live transformed lives, victorious through the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells within us.  We are transformed by following the guidance of the Spirit and not the desires of the flesh.

10. Galatians 5:19-23

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

These verses describe the difference between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit.  As we examine our lives, we can see God’s transforming power to help us bear this good fruit.
