Bible Truth for Everyday Life

10 Comforting Truths for Your Storms in Life

The winter wind beats hard against the western wall of our house, and I stare out the window at the bands of white as they tear across the yard.  These unrelenting gusts remind me that we all face storms in life, and sometimes the best we can do is hunker down and hold fast to the One who promises to hide us in the shelter of his wings.

Most of us know how it feels to be plodding along the even road of good health, blessing, and prosperity, only to ride straight into a storm that changes everything.

It’s all too easy to be plodding along the even road of good health, blessing, and prosperity, only to ride straight into a storm that changes everything. #stormsinlife #faithinGod #encounteringGod Share on X

Storms in Life

This fall, I wrote a post highlighting all the reasons why spiritual attacks aren’t generally against our cars, our health, or our finances (click here to read my post).

The enemy comes to claim the ground of our minds, and if he can harden our hearts or convince us to grow offended at God, he wins.

Our little family has passed beyond the struggles we faced in autumn, and there are rich blessings threaded through the tapestry of the season we now enjoy.   But that doesn’t mean it’s all glitter and sunshine. Not every part of life is blissful in this season, and it seems this is true for most sunshiny seasons as well as most blustery storms in life.

Biblical Truth for Your Storms in Life

There’s usually a cloud or two in the sky on the sunny days, and there’s usually a bit of light piercing through the storm clouds when times are tough.

Regardless of where this day finds you, here are some words to hold onto when the light starts feeling scarce:

1. Storms in life shape you in a way sunny skies never could.

We find this truth in the familiar words of James 1:2-4, which reads: Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.  (If you would like more encouragement on how to let the storms of life shape you to the image of Christ, join me right here.)

2. God will remain faithful in your storms, even when it seems he has abandoned you.

This truth comes from Lamentations 3:22-23, which reads: The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.Encouragement to get you through life's trials and difficult seasons

3. This storm might bruise you, but God is waiting to restore you.

If you are feeling bruised, hold onto the words of Isaiah 42:3, which reads: A bruised reed He will not break and a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish.

4. Your hope is in a Person, and he is holding onto you.

Romans 12:9-12 reads: Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer.

This is where we find our hope, friends.

5. God holds the power to lift this storm when the time is right.

When the time is right, these clouds will pass.

Hold onto the words of Matthew 19:26: And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.

6. Storms in life shape your character to match your calling.

Ephesians 2:10 reads: For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Keep pressing through this storm.  The lessons learned are deepening you, molding you, and transforming you for the work that is set before you.

7. Don’t be surprised by storms in life.

We find this truth in John 16:33, which reads: These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.

Jesus knew you would have storms in life.  He also promised to stay with you in the storms.

8. This storm is developing perseverance, character, and hope in you.

Keep stepping moving forward, and rest in the words of Romans 5:3-5, which reads: And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;  and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

9. This storm will result in glory and honor to God.

Don’t give up.  Find truth in the words of 1 Peter 1:6-7.  This passage reads: In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

10. God thinks loving thoughts about you in the storms.

Maybe you willingly created the perfect ingredients for this storm in life.  Have hope.  God longs to restore you, allure you, and speak kindly to you, even if this storm in life is the natural consequence of your own decisions.

Even if you played a role in bringing this difficult season to your own doorstep, God longs to woo you – to allure you – as he brings you back into tender affections.  We find this powerful truth in Hosea 2:14: Therefore, behold, I will allure her, bring her into the wilderness, and speak kindly to her . . .

Cling to This When You Face Storms in Life:

My favorite verse among the words listed above is the last verse on the list. This is God’s promise to his chosen people, Israel, spoken through the prophet Hosea. God’s people have wandered far from him. They are serving false gods and bowing down to idols. They’re in a storm, and they don’t know it. They’re in a mess, but they’re unaware.

God’s promise is this: He will allure his people. Another translation says that he will woo them. He will captivate their hearts and draw them back to himself.

If your difficult season has come as a result of unwise decisions, don’t lose heart. The Lord calls you back himself like a lover wooing his bride to return to his loving presence.

A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
