Overcoming Trials

7 Stress Relief Bible Verses About Worry and Stress

After a long winter, a hint of auburn crowns the tree line on the eastern horizon.  The buds are emerging on the maples.  I’ve been feeling anxious about some changes that will take place in our next season.  In response, I open my Bible in search of stress relief Bible verses about worry and stress in life.

I need these Truths to wash over me as I step forward without fear or anxiety.

Perhaps you need to soak in these assurances, too.

Stress Relief Bible Verses About Worry and Stress in Life

As I admire the trees, it seems God is pouring his love out as he pours color onto the branches.

We’ll all face worry, stress, and fear in life.  In these times, we need God to pour his love upon us.

Let’s respond to his love by exploring seven stress relief Bible verses about worry and stress.

7 Stress Relief Bible Verses About Worry and Stress

1. Psalm 139:16

And in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them.  Psalm 139:16 NASB

This verse carried me through one of the darkest seasons of my life.  We discovered our unborn child had a heart defect.

I spent weeks worrying about what might happen, fearful for our little one’s future.

Finally, God led me to this verse.  He reminded me that our child’s life was already written.  My role was to care for him by caring for my body, aiming to be a good steward.  The outcomes were not mine to control.

This is true for you, too.

Instead of worrying about what might happen, trust that God’s plans for your life (and the lives of your loved ones) are already written.  Rest in this promise and trust that God will be with you no matter what happens.

God will fulfill his purpose for your life.

When you feel stressed or worried, remind yourself that God has ordained all of your days.  Nothing is a surprise to him.  He has gone ahead of you into every situation you will face today and beyond.

2. Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.  Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV

Do you feel alone as you navigate the worry and stress you’re facing today?

Dear friend, God will never leave you.  He has your back.  He is on your side, and he won’t abandon you.

No matter how stressful your situation becomes, cling to the promise that God has you.  He goes with you.  Even if your worst-case scenario becomes reality, God will care for you, carry you, and use it for good.  Ask him to help you trust him.

3. Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 NKJV

Do you feel fearful of other people who feel like adversaries?

God wants to be your source of strength.

Ask him to help you trust that he will protect you.  He is your Strength and your Fortress.  I encourage you to speak this verse every time the fear of others rises within you.  God is with you, and he will defend you.

4. Psalm 53:6

When I am afraid, I will trust in you.  Psalm 56:3-4 NIV

Our family memorizes a Bible verse every week.  This is one of our children’s favorites.

No matter what comes your way today, you can speak these words, “When I am afraid, I will trust in you!”

I have spoken these words on examining tables in doctors’ offices, when starting new jobs, and when feeling intimidated in all sorts of situations.

God is with you, too.  You can trust him.

5. Isaiah 41:13

For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Isaiah 41:13 NIV

When you face worry and stress, remember that God is holding your hand.  He is leading you.

He will guide you and direct you.

Even if you fall, he is with you to catch you and carry you.

6. Romans 8:15

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:15 KJV

God is a good Father to his children.

Cry out to him in times of stress, fear, worry, and anxiety.  He hears the cries of his children and wants to give you courage!

Overcome stress and worry by staying engaged with God.  Talk to him all day.  Tell him what’s on your heart.  This is what it means to pray without stopping.  He will give you peace in the process.

7. 2 Timothy 1:7

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 NLT

When you feel afraid, remember that this spirit of fear is never from God.  Instead, stand on the promise that God has given you a spirit of power, love, and self-control.  Ask him to help you walk in it!Stress Relief Bible Verses About Worry and Stress

Let’s Apply These Truths to Our Lives

A close friend often reminds me that most of what I worry about will never happen.

But what if it does?

What if the worst-case scenario becomes reality?

How do we overcome worry and stress with God’s help?

Let’s look at three ways to apply these stress relief Bible verses about worry and stress to our lives.

1. We remind ourselves that God is in control, and he is trustworthy.

We can find comfort in the promise that all of our days are ordained before one of them comes to pass (see Psalm 139 above).

Your story is already written.  You are responsible to make wise decisions and avoid intentionally derailing God’s course for your best life.  Fulfill your part, and then rest in the fact that this story is written.

God has this.  Do your best and trust that God is not fearful about how this will play out.   He is in control.  Every time worry springs up in your soul, use it as a catalyst to send you running to the arms of the Lord.

2.  We trust that God is pursuing us in love even when life doesn’t make sense.

Time and time again, we see the word lovingkindness in Scripture.  God’s lovingkindness is often the transliterated word hesed.  Hesed is love in action.

Our stories, even the hard parts, are always opportunities to celebrate God’s physical demonstration of love for us, regardless of how these situations unfold.

You cannot worship God and fear at the same time.  Open your eyes to watch for how God is revealing his love around you.  As you look for God, you will find less space for fixating on fear, worry, and stress.Stress Relief Bible Verses About Worry and Stress

3. We change the way we pray.

We can shift from worry to hope by redefining what it means to pray with thanksgiving.

A few years ago I faced an entirely unnerving health issue.  After about a week of pleading with God as I asked for healing, the redundancy of making the same request day after day started to feel “off.”

I stumbled upon a teaching encouraging me to shift from an attitude of desperation to an attitude of thanksgiving.  (To read more about this change in prayer posture, click here.) Desperation conveys fear, worry, and defeat.  While there is a time to cry out with desperation, there is also a time to pray with thanksgiving.

I made the shift.  Instead of begging God for the same thing day after day, I began thanking God for appropriating my healing, even before I saw signs of its manifestation.  I thanked him that he had heard my prayer.

Every time worry rose up, I told God I couldn’t wait to see how the healing unfolded.

I prayed with excited expectation and gratitude.

Whether God touched my body and healed me without the help of modern medicine, whether he used a doctor to for my healing, or whether his plan was for my healing to be complete upon my heavenly homecoming, my healing was a promise.

Shifting to an attitude of thanksgiving stripped the fear from my prayers and transformed my fear into gratitude and even intimacy.
