How to Trust God More: 7 Ways to Grow in Trust
Layers of altostratus rest above the western tree line like wet towels hastily folded. Splinters of sapphire peer through their sparse creases and remind me of promises for better days to come. Closing my eyes, I remind myself of the power of trusting God in hard times. Today, we’ll explore seven insights on how to trust God more when we don’t understand his ways.

How to Trust God More
Not long ago, I sat with a friend whose heart was broken. We talked about how to find healing when we’re hurting, and I shared as much insight as I could offer.
Whether you’re sitting beneath sunny skies or waiting for the light to break through, I pray these words will help lift your head in the brokenhearted seasons as well. May these words help you grow in trust as you experience the power of trusting God in difficult circumstances.

7 Insights on How to Trust God More
Let’s look at seven insights on how to trust God more.
1. Grow in trust by learning to sort through your emotions with God.
I’ve learned to give myself a few minutes at the end of each day to sit with my feelings and bring them to the Lord.
I give myself permission to be honest about what I’m feeling. Usually, I realize there’s something I need to grieve. But I don’t stop there. I bring my wounds to God, but I also celebrate the good moments.
It might help to name your emotions in this space.
Identify what you’re feeling, name it, and dig beneath it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask God what he wants to show you about your emotions and pay attention to any realizations that come to mind. You might find deeper roots hidden beneath your pain. Keep digging. (For more on how to feel what you feel but stand on the truth, join me here.)
We grow in trust when God becomes a safe Person to process our emotions with.
2. Trust God more by hiding God’s Word in your heart.
After hashing out your emotions with God, return to Truth by opening your Bible. Find a verse to speak into your pain, and stand on that verse whenever you feel weak and doubtful.
Our family has recommitted to the practice of memorizing verses. I’ve been posting a verse each week, and it’s amazing how these truths are touching our hearts. At least ten times a week, a certain little boy in our home repeats his favorite verse from our memorization journey: “When I am afraid, I will trust in you” (Psalm 56:3).
God’s Word renews our minds. We grow in trust by hiding God’s Word in our hearts.
3. Grow in trust by recounting God’s faithfulness to you in the past.
When you’re having trouble trusting God, reflect on the times in the past when he carried you or helped you.
Remembering his past faithfulness can give you assurance in difficult times.

4. Spend time with people who help you trust God.
We all need people in our lives who will remind us that God is trustworthy.
Carve out time to connect with these friends. Ask them to remind you of what is true. Let them speak encouragement to your heart.
5. Step away from daily stress and talk to God in solitude.
Pull away from daily stressors and connect with God in solitude.
Take a 15-minute walk around the block, stroll through a park, or sit on your porch.
God wants to meet with you, and these set apart times in which you talk to him without distractions can help you grow in trust.
6. Spend time in praise and worship.
When we worship God in song, we remind ourselves that he is still on his throne.
We take our eyes off our problems and focus on him. In doing so, we often experience an inner shift. God is magnified, and our problems seems less consuming.
7. Write the Word.
Interacting with the Bible in any way can bring healing when your heart is broken. You might read, memorize, study, or meditate on Scripture.
When I’m having trouble trusting God, I like to write specific Bible promises in a notebook. I search for verses about healing, God’s love, God’s faithfulness, and God’s goodness, and I write them down.
Writing the words for yourself will help your mind imbibe their truths. God will send forth his Word and help you grow in trust.
If these insights on how to trust God more blessed you, let’s now look at what the Bible says about trusting God.
Bible Verses About Trusting God
1. Matthew 6:25
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
This verse reminds us that God cares for us. He wants to meet our needs. Instead of worrying about his provision, he invites us to lift our eyes to him and wait for him to provide for us.
2. Matthew 6:27
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
Worry is the enemy’s weapon to lead us to turn away from the Lord. Satan wants our worries to consume and paralyze us. However, when we learn to use worries as prompts that remind us to look to God, we defeat the enemy with his own weapon.
Every time you feel worried, pause and imagine Jesus sitting on his heavenly throne. He is with you. Draw near to him and thank him for his goodness. In doing so, you will defeat Satan with the weapon he intended to use to destroy you.
3. Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Jesus reminds us to keep our eyes fixed on today. We can plan for the future, but worrying about it takes away our peace.
Have you been worried about something that has not yet happened?
Remind yourself that much of what we worry about never takes place. Furthermore, even if your worst-case scenario becomes reality, God will carry you through it. This leads to our next verse.
4. Isaiah 41:10
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
One of the most powerful ways to overcome worry is to relinquish your worry into God’s hands.
Here’s how it works: Imagine your worst-case worry takes place. Then, ask God to show you the ways he would provide for you and sustain you, even in this scenario. Work through every aspect of the situation with him, asking him to reveal himself to you.
Once you have explored this in depth, ask him to lift the burden from you as you trust that even if your worry becomes reality, God will care for you.
5. 2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
Are you worried about an endeavor that feels intimidating?
Remind yourself that the spirit of fear is not from God. Instead, God gives us the spirit of love, power, and self-discipline. Don’t listen to the voice of fear.
6. 1 Peter 3:14
But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”
Are you worried about a situation involving other people?
God will give you strength to endure. If you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you. Ask him to help you trust him instead of worrying about the threats of others.
7. Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
God is working even when we cannot see his hand at work.
He is inviting you to new levels of faith. Will you trust that he is working in unseen places? If so, your faith will grow. God will also help you rise above your greatest worries.
8. Philippians 4:6
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Instead of gazing at your worries, fix your eyes on Jesus. Tell him about your worries and ask him to help you surrender these cares into his hands. He promises to lift your burdens for you.
You might need to surrender these burdens dozens, or even hundreds of times. That’s okay. Every time you feel worries arise within you, surrender them to Jesus again.
