Bible Truth for Everyday Life

Nine Comforting Bible Verses for Worry (and a Plan for Peace!)

The winter wind writes its story in flourishes of ivory.  As I stare out the window, I feel consumed by worries, and I open my Bible in search of comforting Bible verses for worry.

Perhaps you need this Truth to stand on in challenging times, too.

Let’s look at what the Bible says about worry, and then we will explore three practical ways to overcome worries with God’s help.

9 Comforting Bible Verses for Worry

1. Matthew 6:25

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

This verse reminds us that God cares for us.  He wants to meet our needs.  Instead of worrying about his provision, he invites us to lift our eyes to him and wait for him to provide for us.

2. Matthew 6:27

Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

Worry is the enemy’s weapon to lead us to turn away from the Lord.  Satan wants our worries to consume and paralyze us.  However, when we learn to use worries as prompts that remind us to look to God, we defeat the enemy with his own weapon.

Every time you feel worried, pause and imagine Jesus sitting on his heavenly throne.  He is with you.  Draw near to him and thank him for his goodness.  In doing so, you will defeat Satan with the weapon he intended to use to destroy you.

3. Matthew 6:34

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Jesus reminds us to keep our eyes fixed on today.  We can plan for the future, but worrying about it takes away our peace.

Have you been worried about something that has not yet happened?

Remind yourself that much of what we worry about never takes place.  Furthermore, even if your worst-case scenario becomes reality, God will carry you through it.  This leads to our next verse.

4. Isaiah 41:10

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

One of the most powerful ways to overcome worry is to relinquish your worry into God’s hands.  Here’s how it works: Imagine your worst-case worry takes place.  Then, ask God to show you the ways he would provide for you and sustain you, even in this scenario.  Work through every aspect of the situation with him, asking him to reveal himself to you.

Once you have explored this in depth, ask him to lift the burden from you as you trust that even if your worry becomes reality, God will care for you.

5. 2 Timothy 1:7

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

Are you worried about an endeavor that feels intimidating?

Remind yourself that the spirit of fear is not from God.  Instead, God gives us the spirit of love, power, and self-discipline.  Don’t listen to the voice of fear.

6. 1 Peter 3:14

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”

Are you worried about a situation involving other people?

God will give you strength to endure.  If you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you.  Ask him to help you trust him instead of worrying about the threats of others.

7. Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

God is working even when we cannot see his hand at work.

He is inviting you to new levels of faith.  Will you trust that he is working in unseen places?  If so, your faith will grow.  God will also help you rise above your greatest worries.

8. Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Instead of gazing at your worries, fix your eyes on Jesus.  Tell him about your worries and ask him to help you surrender these cares into his hands.  He promises to lift your burdens for you.

You might need to surrender these burdens dozens, or even hundreds of times.  That’s okay.  Every time you feel worries arise within you, surrender them to Jesus again.

9. John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Before giving birth to our first child, I was worried about the pain I would have to endure.  I was worried something might go wrong.

A friend sent me this verse, and it carried me through labor.

Speak these words when you feel worried, too.  They will carry you.  Jesus wants to give you peace.

How to Apply These Bible Verses on Worry to Your Life

Last year, our family faced many long months spent waiting for God to open the next door.

Meanwhile, every door of possibility seemed to slam shut in our faces.  Waiting on God felt agonizing.

At times, I looked to the future with a worried heart and wondered if worry might consume me.

As we waited, God led me to three specific practices that helped me stay focused on him while we waited for him to move: He led me to worship, stay in the Word, and keep working while we waited.

Let’s talk about these three practices as we apply these Bible verses on worry to our lives.

Worship Instead of Worrying

First, the words of Matthew 6:34 reminded me not to worry.  I decided that every time I felt worried, I would worship Jesus.  Instead of magnifying my fears, I would imagine the glorious One and give him praise.

Most of us are prone to worry while we wait for God to move.

Imagine what would happen if every worry became a reminder to worship Jesus.

Have you ever noticed that you cannot worship and worry at the same time?  When God calls you to a season of uncertainty, make up your mind to worship while you wait on him.

Most of us think of music when we hear the word worship.  Listening to praise music can shift the atmosphere surrounding you.  However, we don’t need music to worship.  Worship is a posture of the heart acknowledging that God is good and trustworthy, even when life does not make sense.

Stay in God’s Word

In addition to worshipping Jesus, I also made sure to stay in God’s Word while we waited.

God’s Word is an anchor for our souls and provides the truth we need to keep putting our faith in Jesus when worries consume us.  God wants to speak directly to our hearts through his Word, and he is eager to encourage us with his Word when we feel worried.

Keep Doing the Work God Has Called You to Do

Finally, God reminded me to keep working instead of focusing on my worries.

Waiting on God isn’t a sedentary kind of waiting.  When God calls us to wait, He also asks us to continue doing the work he has placed in front of us.  Until God gives you a new assignment, continue to pursue the work set before you with all your heart.

After many long months of waiting, God finally opened a new door, and our situation improved.  Looking back, I see the way God transformed our hearts while we waited on him.  It was not an easy wait, but we emerged looking more like Jesus.
