15 Bible Verses About Children: Cherishing and Correcting Them
Our third child was born on a foggy spring morning, and in that moment, a lifetime of anticipation came to fruition. My husband and I sensed our family was complete, and the family I’d wondered about for decades was established in full. Today, we’ll look at a list of Bible verses about children as we thank God for the children in our lives and align ourselves with his perspective regarding children.
I write this post with bittersweet sentiments today.
Our children are a blessing, and I am immensely grateful for them. In the same breath, I think of loved ones who long for children of their own, and God has not fulfilled this longing.
One of the greatest aches is the unmet longing for children of our own. If this is your story, I pray for God’s comfort as you trust him with your story.
Let’s now take some time to reflect on God’s heart for children.
15 Bible Verses About Children
God’s Word has a great deal to say about children. Jesus loved and welcomed children into his presence. Children are a blessing from the Lord. Children also challenge us to become more like Christ.
Here are some noteworthy Scriptures about children.
Bible Verses About Children
1. Psalm 127:3-5, ESV
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
Years ago, when all three of our children were younger, parenthood felt like a long, slow journey of death to self. My friends had older kids, and they had time for pursuing their hobbies, relaxing at the beach, and enjoying long, philosophical conversations.
I was just trying to find time to shower and eat. During that time, one friend said to me, “It sounds like God is refining you through the crucible of parenthood. Don’t lose heart. This isn’t a forever-season. And there will be a reward.”
As I look back now, I realize she was right. The intensity of that season has shifted to the intensity of older kids with countless activities and full schedules.
Parenthood isn’t always easy, but even in the most difficult moments, our kids are blessings. Scripture says they are a reward from God.
No matter what season you are in, whether you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle, the children in your life are blessings. Ask God to help you embrace the joy they bring.
2. Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
God’s original command to his first married couple was to multiply and fill the earth.
Raising godly children who pursue the Lord is a high calling, and it brings glory to God. If God has called you to be a parent, do your best to teach your children about him.
If you don’t have biological children, ask God to show you the young lives he is calling you to pour into. How can you teach these young people to walk with God?
3. Matthew 18:10
See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.
Jesus repeatedly called the disciples to let the children come to him.
He saw value and importance in their lives.
We can learn from the children in our lives. Their simple trust models the way God wants us to approach him and trust him. Their joy, curiosity, and lack of inhibition teach us a great deal about how God wants us to live.
4. Proverbs 17:6
Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.
Relationships that span across generations are blessings.
If you are a grandparent, savor and enjoy your grandchildren as much as you can. If you are young, honor and treasure the older relatives in your life.
5. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Moses spoke these words just before God’s people entered the Promised Land. He was teaching them the importance of teaching the next generation to walk with God.
This is our commission today as well.
We are to point our kids to God in all things, speaking of him often and helping them encounter him.
6. Matthew 21:56-16
But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”
In Psalm 8:2, King David wrote, “Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.” David was pointing out that God chooses the weak to bring him glory.
During his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, Jesus cleared the temple and began performing miracles. The children began calling out, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”
The religious leaders were indignant, but Jesus pointed out what the leaders rejected: Jesus was the promised King. The children recognized it, but the religious leaders did not.
7. Matthew 10:13-16
And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
Children set the example of how we should approach God: With joyful, trusting, expectant hearts.
Bible Verses About Children and How to Raise Them
The following Bible verses about children tell us how to raise them to love the Lord.
8. Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
When we teach our kids to love the Lord as children, they will return to it later in life, even if they drift away for a time.
Claim this verse if you are the parent of a prodigal child. The seeds you planted will not be wasted. Be faithful in prayer, trusting that God holds your child’s life in his hands.
9. Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
As parents, we are told not to provoke our children. This includes setting firm boundaries, being consistent, and parenting with gentle strength.
10. Proverbs 1:8-9
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.
Our parents possess the wisdom that comes from living longer than us. For this reason, we should learn from the wisdom they share with us.
11. Proverbs 13:24
Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
Disciplining our children can be challenging, but this verse reminds us that it is an act of love.
Setting firm boundaries and expectations helps our kids flourish.
12. Proverbs 29:17
Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.
Again, this verse teaches the importance of discipling our children in love. If we fail to discipline our kids when they are young, we will see the consequences later in their lives.
Bible Verses About Children Obeying Their Parents
13. Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
The commandment about honoring our parents comes with a promise: Our lives will go well, and we will live long.
14. Exodus 20:12
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
The command to honor our parents was originally given as part of the 10 Commandments. When we honor our parents, we are blessed.
15. Colossians 3:20
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Likewise, children are to obey their parents because this pleases the Lord.
