Nothing Is Too Hard for God: Trusting the God of the Impossible

“Nothing is too hard for God.  You can trust him with this,” a friend offered as we walked in the fading evening light.

I wanted to believe her, but the assignment in front of me felt impossible, even for God.

I’ll share the details about this situation shortly.  First, let’s turn to God’s Word as we consider the promise that nothing is too hard for God.

Nothing Is too Hard for God

My friend’s words were from the promise found in Jeremiah 32:27, which reads, ““I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (NIV).

We see this principle of God’s power over all things woven throughout the entire Bible.  One of the best examples is found in the Gospel of Matthew.

The 14th chapter of Matthew’s Gospel is one of my favorite chapters in the New Testament because we see Jesus do the impossible more than once.  First, Jesus feeds a crowd of more than 5,000 people with just five loaves of bread and two fish.  In the next scene, he walks on water, invites Peter to join him, and saves Peter when he begins to sink.

“O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Jesus says to Peter as he pulls him from the water (Matthew 14:31, AMP).

We are all much like Peter.  When the wind and waves of life feel threatening, we take our eyes off of Jesus and focus on the obstacles surrounding us.

This leads me back to my conversation with my friend.

Nothing Is too Hard for God: Facing Impossible Situations With God’s Help

That evening, as my friend and I walked in the summer twilight, I was facing a situation that felt impossible.  I’d been blogging for a few months and had only 37 followers.  After attending a writing conference, I learned that most traditional publishing companies want writers to have at least 5,000 blog followers before they consider publishing a writer’s book.

I had dreams of publishing a book I’d recently drafted, and my friend reminded me that even though it felt impossible to me, nothing was too hard for God.

Later, after our walk, I had an honest conversation with God.

“God, there’s no way I can do this on my own.  I’ve been doing everything I know to do, and acquiring 5,000 followers feels impossible,” I prayed.

God didn’t speak to me in an audible voice.  I didn’t even sense him promising to build my blog following.  I sensed him asking me to be faithful—to keep doing what he asked me to do and trusting that he always provides for the situations into which he calls us.

God’s Role and Our Role

For me, faithfulness looked like learning everything I could learn about blogging and writing and sticking with it for years of slow and steady growth.

For the disciples, faithfulness looked like trusting Jesus when he asked them to distribute a few fish and loaves of bread.

In Peter’s case, faithfulness looked like stepping out of the boat and trusting that if Jesus had called him to walk on water, he would make a way.

Are you facing any situations that feel impossible right now?  Maybe you desperately want to see God move in power, but it’s starting to feel impossible.

Impossible Situations

What would it look like for you to be faithful in your impossible situation right now?

Often, faithfulness looks far less spiritual than we imagine.  It looks like getting out of bed for the thousandth day in a row and pouring your whole heart into whatever God has set before you.  It looks like watching for the needs of others and taking steps to meet those needs.

Faithfulness is all about sticking with the work God has called you to do when it feels thankless and tiresome.  God can do the impossible in your life, but you have a role to play.  Your role is to remain faithful.

As for me, after years of faithfully writing on my blog, God did the impossible.  I now have many more than 5,000 blog followers.  It took hard work, and there were times when I felt tempted to quit, but I’m glad I remained faithful.  God did the impossible for me, but I had a role play.  Nothing is too hard for God.

What is God asking of you today?
