Be Still and Trust: 50 Devotions for Peace, Rest and Renewal

I’m excited to share that we are just over a week away from the release of my newest book, a devotional book called Be Still and Trust: 50 Devotions for Peace, Rest and Renewal.  These devotions are designed to help readers create space for stillness and rest with God as they navigate full schedules and busy lives.

Today, I’m sharing the introduction from the devotional and invite you to return next week to learn more and buy the book!

Be Still and Trust

I recently walked outside in the warm summer sunshine and did something I haven’t done in far too long.  I collapsed onto the damp earth and watched the maple leaves dance in the breeze overhead.  For the first time in what felt like months, my mind quieted.  I noticed the sound of the wind as it rustled in the leaves and the soft serenade of a dozen different songbirds.

Closing my eyes, I thanked God for his presence with me, and one of my favorite verses came to mind: “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NIV).

“Yes. This,” I whispered.

I’d been lying in the grass, thinking of God’s goodness, for less than two minutes when my moment of reverie was interrupted.  Disrupted by the sound of a growling motor, I sat up, startled.

My husband had emerged from the garage with a chainsaw and was cutting a tree less than 30 yards away.  So much for my moment of silence and solitude.  Brushing the grass clippings from my back, I meandered into the house only to be greeted by arguing children and a blaring TV.

“When are we going to the store?  You promised we’d go to the store!” one child declared.

“Mom, I’m hungry,” another child whined.

“Mom, I need more bedding for my mice!  Their cage smells!” a third child yelled from upstairs.

So much for quietly connecting with God.  Why do I even try?  I thought.  Within minutes, we were loaded in the car on our way to the store.  Stillness would have to wait.

When Stillness Feels Impractical

Perhaps your experience with “being still and letting God be God” is similar.  Your distractions are probably a bit different, but we all face the challenge of full days with limited time for quietly connecting with God.

We want to learn to cease striving as we trust God with the details of our lives, but this never comes easily.

I’ve learned that I need to intentionally carve out space to slow down, lean into silence, and surrender my burdens to God.  Spontaneous afternoons spent lying in the yard might occasionally occur, but they are usually interrupted within minutes.

In this season of my life, I most regularly find stillness in the early morning hours—before the activity of the day overtakes our home.  I find a few quiet moments to talk to God, rest in his presence, and soak in his Word.  This time often includes asking him to help me trust him with challenging situations and releasing my ongoing desire to control every realm of my life.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
