14 Comforting Bible Verses for Hope and Assurance

The songbirds awoke me with their morning melodies, and until I checked the clock, I was sure it was still the middle of the night.  Each new day begins early this time of year. Unable to return to sleep, I pulled out my Bible in search of comforting Bible verses to carry me through the day ahead.

Writing the words in my journal, they felt like an anchor, reminding me of my source of hope.

Today, I’m sharing the verses I listed.

We’ll also talk about how to apply these Scriptures to our painful circumstances.

I invite you to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you navigate challenging situations with God’s help.

If you need comfort today, spend some time soaking in these comforting Bible verses about God’s care for you.

14 Comforting Bible Verses About God’s Love and Care

1. Psalm 139:16 (ESV)

In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

These words have carried me through some of life’s most painful losses.

God writes all of our days before one of them exists.  We don’t always understand why God allows loss, but we can trust that he is able to use it for good.

This leads to our next verse.

2. Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

God wants to use this difficult time to deepen you, soften you, and shape you.

Press into him.  He wants to use this for good, using this to shape you into the image of Jesus.

3. Psalm 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

God is near.  He will not abandon you.

Resist the temptation to turn away from him in anger or offense.  He wants to heal you and bless you.  He is able to redeem any loss.

4. Ecclesiastes 11:5

As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.

We simply cannot understand all of God’s ways.

Ask God to help you trust him with what you cannot understand.  This is where faith is tested.

5. 1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

You might be feeling anxious as you look to the future.  God is inviting you to cast your worries onto him.  He wants to help you live with the deep trust that he will fulfill his purpose.

6. John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

How do we discern the difference between the work of the enemy and the work of God?  Satan steals, kills, and destroys.  God brings life and goodness.

God permits loss, but he is not a God of destruction and death.  This can be a difficult grey area to discern, but rest in this: God is always good.  He can use any loss for good in your life and the lives of others.

7. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

God is gently inviting you to go deeper in trust.  In the meantime, he will help you know him in a deeper, more experiential way.  He will also make your paths straight and heal your heart.  Will you turn to him today?

8. 1 Peter 4:14

If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.

When the trials and tribulations of life don’t relent, the glory of God rests on you.

Have the trials and tribulations of life worn you thin?

Take heart.  Beauty rises from ashes.  And where God creates beauty, his glory is made known.

9. 1 Peter 4:13

But to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.

This trial holds the power to magnify the goodness of God through you.  Keep going.  Keep your heart soft.  Fight offense.  Your story isn’t finished yet.

Additionally, when you’re in the thick of the trial, you share in fellowship with Christ.

10. Hebrews 4:15

We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin.

We don’t need to understand this for it to be true.  Jesus understands every struggle, weakness, and temptation we will ever face.

We can allow the trials and tribulations of life to harden our hearts, or we can use them as prompts to draw near to the One who really does understand.Comforting Bible Verses About God's Care

11. Psalm 5:12

Surely, LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

Even in times of trouble, God surrounds you like a shield.

No matter what happens in the world around you, if you humble yourself before God and lean on him by faith, he will surround you with favor as with a shield.

You can trust that when God permits trouble in your life, he doesn’t enjoy it.  Troubles come because we live in a fallen world where human beings have free will.

Trouble exists because people make ungodly choices, life is hard, and an enemy prowls around looking for people to destroy.  Nevertheless, when God permits trouble in your life, you can trust that he intends to use it for your good and his glory.

12. John 16:33

Jesus spoke these words, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Jesus directly told us that life would be hard at times.

Because Jesus said it, we can expect it.

But let’s not get stuck here.

We don’t have to live in fear during troubled times.  Jesus promises peace.  There will be tribulation, but let’s not lose heart because Jesus has overcome the world.

13. Romans 8:38-39

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

When life is difficult, do you ever wonder if God still loves you?  When you begin to doubt God’s love for you, stand on the promise from Romans 8:38-39.

Nothing can ever take God’s love away from you.

Furthermore, when we study Scripture, we often see that trouble is a sign of God’s presence, not his absence.

14. Revelation 22:12

Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.

Take heart because you have a reward awaiting you in heaven.

And so, if you’ve had as much as you can take, don’t give up just yet.  Your reward awaits on the other side of this life.  This story isn’t finished just yet.

When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones.
