How to Experience Freedom in Christ: 15 Bible Verses About Freedom in Christ
Throughout the past months, I’ve been on a journey of experiencing God’s healing in deep, soul-shaping ways. I’ve dealt with debilitating physical setbacks that have drastically changed my lifestyle. Meanwhile, God has been working in my heart. Through my physical suffering, I’ve learned more about true spiritual freedom in Christ. Today, we’ll explore 15 Bible verses about freedom and Christ and apply these Scriptures to our lives.
Freedom in Christ is a liberation from the power of sin through the Holy Spirit.
Everything God permits in our lives is meant to be a vessel of healing. Every challenge is meant to lead us to God in dependence, healing our souls as we follow him into deeper freedom.
This doesn’t make sense to our finite minds when we’re suffering. We want to reach the other side of the suffering.
Throughout the past months, I have directly declared, “I’m done learning the lessons, God. Please just let this end.”
Meanwhile, God is a loving Father. He will keep us in life’s refining fires for as long as it takes to accomplish his work in our hearts.
As we consider these truths, let’s turn to God’s Word as we align ourselves with God to experience freedom in Christ.
Bible Verses About Freedom in Christ
The Bible has a great deal to say about freedom in Christ. Here are 15 powerful Bible verses about this freedom.
Bible Verses About Freedom in Christ
1. Galatians 5:1, ESV
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
When Jesus died on the cross, he set us free from the power of sin.
We are no longer slaves to our sinful desires. We are seated with Christ in heavenly places.
Our role is to surrender to God so that our desires come into alignment with his desires. As this takes place, we will experience freedom in Christ.
2. John 8:32
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
God’s Word is truth. When we walk in obedience to God’s Word, we experience freedom by remaining within his protective boundaries.
3. John 8:36
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
We find freedom in Jesus when we receive him as the Savior and Leader of our lives.
When this happens, our old, sinful nature is nailed to the cross. Christ begins the sanctifying work of making us more like him. As this process unfolds, we experience his freedom.
4. 2 Corinthians 3:17
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
The Holy Spirit dwells within every believer.
He gives us the power to walk in step with God and experience the freedom of obedience.
5. Galatians 5:13
For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
Many people resist Jesus because they believe that following him will stifle their freedom. The opposite is actually true. True freedom comes by obeying God. This principle must be experienced to be understood.
6. Romans 8:1-4
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
In Christ, we are set free from the guilt and shame of sin.
If you are experiencing shame over your past or present sins, this is not from God. Repent by turning away from sin and turning toward God. Then, receive the forgiveness of Jesus at the foot of the cross.

7. Galatians 5:18
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
All people fall short and sin against God.
Jesus bore God’s punishment against sin by dying on the cross in our place. He took the punishment we deserve for sinning.
By following Jesus, we are no longer bound to the law. God forgives us for falling short because he punished Jesus in our place.
8. Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.
When Jesus died on the cross, he lifted a curse from us: the curse of the law.
We are no longer bound by God’s law. We no longer offer animal sacrifices to pay for our sins (breaking the law). Jesus became the curse, bearing God’s wrath in our place. He rose again and is seated next to God, where he intercedes for us.
9. Galatians 5:24
And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
What is our role when it comes to walking in freedom?
We must daily crucify our ungodly desires and passions, nailing them to the cross and refusing to submit to them.
10. Matthew 11:30
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
We don’t nail our ungodly passions to the cross in human strength. We ask Jesus to help us. This is a prayer he will answer because he is not asking us to keep a long list of rules. His yoke (teaching) is not burdensome. He carries our burdens for us.
11. Colossians 1:22
He has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.
In Christ, we are blameless before God.
This is true freedom.
12. Galatians 3:23
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.
We are no longer held captive to the law when we walk with Jesus.
13. Romans 8:15
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Because of our freedom in Christ, we call out to God as a child calls to a loving earthly father.
There is no fear in Christ. We have been adopted into God’s family.
14. Romans 6:18
And, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
Freedom in Christ sets us free from the power of sin and makes us slaves of righteous living. And this “slavery” is not a burden. It is a gift that yields abundance and peace in life.
15. 1 Corinthians 10:23
“All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
In Christ, we are not bound to the Old Testament systems. However, we are to discern which behaviors are helpful and which are not.
A Practical Application of these Bible Verses About Freedom in Christ
Over these past months, I’ve been learning to strive less and rest more deeply in Christ. I’ve continued on the journey of releasing perfectionism.
I have more margin in my schedule, which leaves room for impromptu walks with friends, chats with neighbors, and space to savor God’s gifts.
I’ve stopped trying to be everything for everyone and have learned to say no.
Saying no to certain activities has created space for better endeavors.
What does freedom in Christ Look like?
I have plenty of room for growth, but I am learning to embrace the freedom we read about in today’s verses.
Jesus wants his followers to experience a deep, soul-level rest, which includes freedom from worry, anxiety, striving, and the burdens we experience while living in this world. This is freedom in Christ.
Yet this is not an inactive form of rest. We aren’t called to spend our lives sitting alone in fields of wildflowers, avoiding difficult people and challenging circumstances. Jesus invites us to learn to rest with him while we undertake the work in front of us.
In his invitation to rest, Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you.”
A yoke is wooden bar joining oxen or other working animals together for labor. In Jesus’ time, a yoke was symbolic for a rabbi’s teaching. Students who followed a rabbi’s interpretation of the Law were said to be under that rabbi’s yoke.
As a rabbi, Jesus was making a noteworthy declaration regarding his yoke: His yoke was not burdensome; it was light. He wanted to show his followers a better way of living.
Following Jesus is not about adhering to a long list of rules. This message is at the heart of these Bible verses about freedom in Christ.
Freedom in Christ begins as we respond to his invitation to a life-giving relationship with him.
When we embrace this relationship, he gives us the strength to do the work set before us in an unburdened way.
We don’t need to strain or strive because he is with us, empowering us. In this way, the rest Jesus offers is active rest. He teaches us to rest in him while we work alongside him.
We also find freedom from the law.
What is freedom from the law?
When we read about the law, this refers to the Old Testament rules God’s people were required to keep prior to Christ’s coming. It included the Ten Commandments as well as other laws that protected the people and led to blessing.
The first five books of the Old Testament describe these protective rules.
When Jesus came, he established a New Covenant. Rather than being bound by the law, followers of Christ are given new hearts and new spirits. The Holy Spirit comes to live within us. When this happens, we want to honor God with our behavior, not out of duty, but out of love.
We have freedom in Christ because we are not bound to a set of rules. Rather, we are bound to Christ, and his sacrifice on the cross pays the price for our sins.
We live in union with him, and our lives bear fruit from this union. This fruit includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.
It’s not about keeping rules; it’s about abiding in the One who helps us bear his fruit.
How does this apply to our lives as followers of Christ?
Our freedom in Christ enables us to follow Jesus without striving. We rest while we serve alongside him.
We are also set free from trying to perfectly follow God’s law. When we fall short, we confess our sins and receive God’s forgiveness.
Furthermore, we have victory in Jesus because our old, sinful natures are nailed to the cross when we receive Jesus. His power lives in us, giving us all we need to overcome temptation and live victoriously.
