Strength for the Weary Heart: 15 Scriptures on Weakness and Weariness
I recently walked barefoot across the yard as the sun shone bright on a July evening. My pace had been rushed, and the space to step away and rest pulled me from the demands of the day. Opening my Bible, I lay on the damp grass as I soaked in God’s Word, speaking Scriptures on weakness and weariness over my life.
Perhaps you need this today as well.
Let’s take some time to let God’s Word replenish us as we consider his thoughts on weakness and exhaustion.
I also invite you to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you draw near to God in weak and weary moments.
Scriptures on Weakness and Weariness
Let’s turn to God’s Word.
15 Scriptures on Weakness and Weariness
1. 2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
In your weakest moments, God is waiting to reveal his powerful presence.
Friend, your weakness is the perfect backdrop for God to show up and make his power known. He wants to pour his love through you when you have nothing left to give.
2. 1 Peter 5:10
And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
If you feel weak and weary today, lean into God. He wants to sustain you.
Keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Also, remember that the season you are living in today is not a forever season. Keep your eyes fixed on God’s sufficiency as you wait for this season to shift.
3. John 15:5
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
We abide in the Lord by talking to him throughout our days, spending set-apart moments in quiet prayer, reading our Bibles, and keeping our eyes fixed on him.
Stay connected to the life-giving Vine throughout your days, and he will sustain you. He will also enable your life to bear good fruit.
4. 2 Peter 1:3
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.
You can trust that God is sufficient because he promises to equip you with all you need to fulfill his will for you.
God has given you all you need to walk with him.
5. Hebrews 4:15-16
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
When Jesus walked on earth, he experienced every temptation known to humankind.
Jesus empathizes with us in our weakness because he knows how it feels to live in human body.
Turn to him in your weakness. He wants to help and sustain you.
6. James 4:6
But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
The first step toward receiving God’s strength is humbling ourselves and admitting we need him.
If you feel weak and weary today, turn to God and ask him to sustain you and carry you. He wants to reveal himself in your moments of weakness.
7. Romans 8:26
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
At times, we can become so weary that we don’t even know how to pray. We can find peace in knowing that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in prayer.
8. Philippians 4:13
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
This verse has become a slogan for setting goals and asking God to bless our plans. Meanwhile, this is not a promise that God will bless everything we set our minds to accomplish.
Paul wrote these words while he was imprisoned. He was declaring that he could endure suffering because God would give him strength.
We can apply this verse to our own suffering and weakness. We can persevere because God is with us, helping us.

9. Psalm 34:17-20
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
We can also feel weak during times of emotional brokenness.
If your heart is broken today, God is near. He wants to heal you and deliver you.
10. Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
God wants to give you strength and power to accomplish his will.
Ask him to fill you with his strength.
11. Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Do you need someone to hold you up during this time?
God’s right hand is upon you, and he will carry you.
12. Exodus 15:2
The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
These words are part of Moses’ song. He declared these words after God delivered the Hebrew people from the Egyptians at the Red Sea.
We can gain strength in weakness by reminding ourselves that God is our strength and our song. He is our salvation, and he is worthy of our praise.
13. Isaiah 40:31
But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
We gain strength by waiting on God.
Ask God to show you what it will look like to wait on him today.
14. Nehemiah 8:10
Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
A close friend often repeats these words as a mantra for life: “The joy of the Lord is my strength.”
When we need strength, we find it by encountering God’s joy. We can experience God’s joy in many ways: worshiping him in song, reading joyful passages of Scripture, spending time in nature, or even imagining him sitting with us, smiling over us in love.
15. 1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Sometimes, our weariness is the result of the burdens we are carrying.
Do you need to cast any cares on God and receive his strength today?

Let’s now take some time to apply these Scriptures on weakness to our lives.
An Application of These Scriptures on Weakness
Some part of your life probably feels especially difficult when you’re worn and weary. It’s exponentially harder to teach your classroom of students, smile at ungrateful patrons, chase your grandchildren, or serve your patients with a smile when you’re tired.
You might be weary because you can never seem to get ahead at work. No matter how hard you work, there’s always more to do.
Maybe you’re worn out from keeping up with your kids while trying to work from home.
Perhaps you’re physically exhausted because you lie awake at night thinking about everything you need to do the next day.
I don’t know about you, but loving God and loving others feels ridiculously impossible when I’m physically exhausted. I can muddle my way through laundry, errands, and meal prep, but extending kindness and patience to people when I’m tired is hard.
The Next Time You Feel Worn and Weary
The next time you feel exhausted, remind yourself of 1 Corinthians 3:5: “Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit.”
God is providing an opportunity for you to find your power and ability from the overflow of his sufficiency.
When you feel exhausted, remind yourself of 1 Corinthians 3:5. God is providing an opportunity for you to find your power and ability from the overflow of his sufficiency. #GodsPower #GodsGrace #weariness #TrustingGod Share on X
Instead of trying to muster more strength, lean into God in your weakness.
Ask him to fill you with his love and reveal his sufficiency in your emptiness.
He is waiting to help you.
The secret no one tells you in your worn and weary moments is this: Your weariness is an opportunity for God to reveal his power in your life.
An Invitation to Talk to God About the State of Your Soul
Today, I invite you to spend a few quiet moments with the Lord and ask him what he wants you to know about the worn and weary areas of your life.
What would it look like to do the work set before you through God’s power when you’re tired?
Thank God that your weakness is an opportunity for him to show his sufficiency. Imagine his love and power flowing through you in your weariness. He is waiting to make his sufficiency known.
When I’m especially weary, I try to look to Jesus every time I feel tired throughout the day. I ask him to help me and imagine his love and power filling me. In this way, if I notice that I feel exhausted 25 times throughout the day, I also experience 25 moments of connection with the Lord.
In this way, God is glorified in my weakest moments.
