15 Comforting Bible Verses About Healing From Trauma
Before we take a closer look at today’s Bible verses about healing from trauma, I invite you to join me as I prepare to release a new book. In just over a month, I will release a new book for teens. It’s called Anchored: A Teen Devotional for Understanding the Old Testament and Applying It to Your Life.
My vision is to teach teens the key narratives from the Old Testament while helping them see that all of Scripture is relevant to our everyday lives. These devotions delve into everything from anxiety to sexuality, all drawn from the truth of God’s Word. I’m building a launch team right now. If you’re interested, send me a message or click on this link, and I’ll invite you to the Facebook page. There is no pressure, just an opportunity to pray over the book and help spread the word!
And now, onto today’s post!
Comforting Bible Verses About Healing From Trauma
We live in a broken world, and most of us will face trauma. One of the best responses to trauma is reaching out to a trained therapist who can help. We can also turn to God in prayer, anchoring ourselves to his truth. Today, we’ll look at 15 comforting Bible verses about healing from trauma.
At some point, most people will endure the trauma of dramatically losing loved ones, witnessing horrific acts of violence, or enduring direct, personal trauma.
Let’s turn to God’s Word as we align ourselves with God’s perspective about these situations. I also invite you to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you find comfort and healing as you seek God.
Here are God’s words about healing from and dealing with trauma.
Bible Verses About Healing From Trauma
1. John 10:10, ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
We need to begin today’s message with a clarifying distinction: God is not the author of trauma and abuse.
Trauma and abuse are agents of destruction in this world, and any time we see destruction, we can be assured that God is not the source. Satan prowls around the earth looking for people to devour. He intends to use trauma to destroy lives.
If you are healing from a traumatic past, it might feel tempting to blame God. You might feel tempted ask why God allowed you to suffer.
I’ve learned that some of my questions will never find answers in this lifetime. Here is what I do know: All destruction, trauma, and abuse are works of the enemy.
God wants his children to be healed and whole.
He is fighting for you and wants to heal you. Resist the temptation to blame him or turn away from him with an offended spirit. If this happens, you’ll be turning away from your source of healing.
2. Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
God wants to lift you up and deliver you from the difficult memories of the trauma you have endured.
This is where he will probably lead you to invite another person into your journey. If you haven’t reached out to a therapist who can help you find healing, I encourage you to do so.
We heal together, not in isolation. Talking through the trauma might feel like the most horrific idea in the world. If this is the case, it is an indication that the best step you can take is to bring it into the light with someone who is trustworthy and trained to help you.
3. Psalm 6:2
Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled.
In addition to seeking professional support, turn to God in prayer.
Tell him everything you are feeling. Release your emotions with him. This process is often referred to as lamenting with God.
Lamentation can be a healing process as you release everything you’ve been holding onto.
4. Luke 4:18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.
Jesus quoted this passage from Isaiah as he ministered during his time on earth. Jesus’ purpose has not changed.
He wants to free captives, recover sight to the blind, and liberate the oppressed.
The first step for receiving this healing freedom is giving your life to Jesus. From the foundation of a relationship with him, he wants to heal you and free you from the difficult parts of your past.
5. Psalm 107:20
He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction.
God’s Word heals us.
As you seek healing, spend time in God’s Word. The Psalms can be a good place to find comfort.
Commit to reading the Bible daily, and God will use his Word to heal your heart and renew your mind. I also encourage you to memorize Scripture. Memorize these Bible verses about healing from trauma or find more.
Also, study God’s Word as you aim to learn more about his character and grow in trust.
6. Malachi 4:2
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.
God wants to heal you and free you from the pain of the trauma you have endured.
Turn to him for this healing today.
7. Psalm 30:2
O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me.
Just as the psalmist cried out to God for help, God wants us to cry out to him.
Turn to him when your heart is heavy. He wants to lift this burden from you.
More Bible Verses About Healing From Trauma
8. Psalm 103:2-3
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases . . .
God is our great Healer.
As you read your Bible, remind yourself of his goodness. He wants to heal and restore you. Focus on God’s character. As you keep your eyes on him, he will help you move forward.
9. Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
As I shared above, God’s primary vessel for renewing our minds is the Bible.
Spend time soaking in Scripture, and God will transform and renew your mental outlook on life.
10. Ephesians 6:12
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
We live in a spiritual world. Trauma is the physical manifestation of Satan’s work on earth.
As you pursue healing, there will be spiritual forces trying to hinder your healing. This is why it’s important to elicit the support of other people and stay connected to God throughout the process.
Our battle is not of flesh and blood.
11. Hebrews 10:30
For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.”
If you suffered trauma at the hands of an abuser, this person will be held accountable by God.
God is fair and just. Leave vengeance to him. He will right the wrongs that have been done to you.
12. 2 Thessalonians 1:6
Since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you . . .
Again, find peace in knowing that retribution is in God’s hands.
13. Isaiah 35:4
Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.”
In Scripture, God is often referred to as the Lord of Hosts. He is the King of a heavenly army, and he has already sent his heavenly army into battle for you. He is fighting for your healing.
14. Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
God intends to heal your heart and bind up the wounds that have been inflicted upon your soul. He is inviting you to lean into this healing process. It won’t be easy, but he will be with you to help and comfort you.
15. Exodus 14:14
The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.
After the Hebrew people escaped from Egypt, where they had been held captive as slaves for hundreds of years, God spoke these words over them. They were being chased down by a formidable Egyptian army, and the future looked bleak.
In his faithfulness, God pulled back the waters of the Red Sea. His people crossed safely on dry ground. When the Egyptian army followed them, God brought the thundering walls of water down upon then, drowning them.
God wants to fight for you in this same way.
One day, he will remove all evil from earth.
Until then, he wants you to experience his healing and restoration.
Ask him to show you what step you can take to follow him in this, and take that step today.
