Give It to God: 15 Bible Verses for Anxiety and Stress

Before we explore today’s Bible verses for anxiety and stress, I invite you to join me as I prepare to release a new book. On November 3, I will release a new book for teens.  It’s called Anchored: A Teen Devotional for Understanding the Old Testament and Applying It to Your Life.

My vision is to teach teens the key narratives from the Old Testament while helping them see that all of Scripture is relevant to our everyday lives.  These devotions delve into everything from anxiety to sexuality, all drawn from the truth of God’s Word.

Watch for it to release soon or preorder the Kindle Version on Amazon here!

And now, onto today’s post!

Give It to God

The outside world is washed in color: Apricot maple leaves waving in the morning light.  I admire them and notice tension in my chest, anxiety.  Pulling out my Bible, I spend the first moments of the day filling my mind with Bible verses for anxiety, aiming to find alignment with the One who is never worried.

We all deal with stress in life.

During these times, or when anxiety rises within us, standing on God’s Word can help us shift from fear to peace.

Today, we’ll explore 15 Bible verses for anxiety, worry, and stress.  We’ll also talk about practical ways to cast our cares on God.

Be sure to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you find peace in God’s presence.

Bible Verses for Anxiety, Worry, and Stress

Let’s begin with God’s Word.

15 Bible Verses for Anxiety

1. Psalm 55:22, ESV

Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

God invites us to cast our burdens onto him.

He wants to carry your heaviest burden today, friend.  You might not feel like you have the strength or ability to surrender it to him.  If this is the case, ask him to lift it for you.  He wants to exchange the weight of worry for his peace.

2. Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

These words were spoken over Joshua as he led the Israelites into the Promised Land.  The task felt daunting, but it was not too big for God.

What situation feels too big for you today?

If you are a follower of Christ, you can stand on the promise that God goes with you.  He will equip you for your calling, and he will help you.

3. Matthew 6:34

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Worrying about the future might make us feel like we are being prepared or are in control.  In reality, worrying only strips us of energy for today.

Trust that God will help you step into tomorrow as you surrender your worries to him.15 Bible Verses for Anxiety

4. Hebrews 13:6

So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Anxiety often stems from interactions with others.

It can be related to the fear of failure, the fear of rejection, people-pleasing, or direct attacks from others.

In these situations, we can remind ourselves that God is with us to help us.  He doesn’t want us to live in fear.

5. Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

When we feel anxious, God invites us to draw near to him with thankful hearts.  He wants us to directly ask him for help.

In response, he promises to cover us with his peace.

6. John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Jesus spoke these words over his followers before his death on the cross.

He speaks these words over us, too.

God wants us to walk in peace.  If anxiety is stealing your peace, claim this verse.  Memorize it and speak it when you feel anxious.

7. 1 Peter 5:7

Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

God is a good Father, and he cares for us.

He wants to carry our anxieties because he loves us.

8. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

As we trust God, not relying on our human ability to make sense of our circumstances, God directs us.

Cling to this promise when you feel uncertain and anxious.

9. Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Jesus invites us to live in a place of peaceful rest in him.

When you feel anxious, draw near to him.  Go to a quiet place and talk to him.  Imagine him holding you, singing over you, and giving you his peace.

10. Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

When life is difficult, God is still with us.

We don’t need to fear evil because he walks with us.

11. Isaiah 41:10

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

This promise from Isaiah is another powerful reminder that God is always with us, giving us strength and upholding us.

12. Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

This short verse is an excellent verse to memorize.

When we are fearful, God is trustworthy.

13. Romans 8:38-39

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love.

Rest in this when you feel anxious.

14. Matthew 6:27

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

Anxiety offers the false promise of troubleshooting potential problems.  Meanwhile, much of what we worry about never happens anyway.  Even when it does, worrying about it wasted energy that could have been used elsewhere.

15. Psalm 27:1

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Because God is with us, we don’t need to live in fear, worry, and anxiety.

Speak this verse when you feel anxious.

I’m passionate about equipping others to encounter God in powerful and life-changing ways. When I’m not writing, you’ll find me hiking, jogging, exploring wild places with my three young children and husband, leading small groups, and mentoring younger women. A certified special education teacher, I am on leave from the classroom for a season of chasing frogs and playing in creeks with my little ones. Most of all, the compassionate love of Jesus has forever ravished my heart, and I'm emphatic about making his love known to the world.
