God Is Sufficient When You’re Weak, Worn, and Weary

    August 3, 2022 /

A skirmish of maple leaves flutters to the earth—the color of moonrise on a cloudless night.  It’s early in the season for falling leaves, but perhaps these leaves have grown tired from holding on.  I’m tired tonight, too.  I could use a gentle reminder that God is sufficient to help me in my weak, worn, and weary seasons. I decide to sit beneath the maples with my Bible, and I stumble into these words: “Not that we are adequate in ourselves so as to consider anything as having come from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God” (1 Corinthians 3:5 NASB). Here in the silence of the words, I’m reminded that God wants me to…

    July 13, 2022 /

Have you ever wondered how to know if you are walking in the Spirit?  Maybe you want to be used by God and live for his honor, but you wonder if you are making a difference. Today, we’ll talk about how to know you’re walking in the Spirit and explore practical ways to stay in step with the Holy Spirit.  First, I’ll offer a silly example of choosing between walking in the Spirit and walking in the flesh.  Then, we’ll look at five ways to walk in the Spirit. How to Know If You Are Walking in the Spirit Every summer, we clean our house by spraying it with a…

How to “Be Still and Know That I Am God”

    May 18, 2022 /

The shaded canopy at the trailhead fluttered to the ground, one golden leaf at a time.  I was in the woods because I’d grown weary from juggling the many commitments in my life.  I was desperate to quiet my soul and relearn how to “be still and know that I am God.” You probably know about the exhausting effort of juggling your commitments. Your arms grow weary, and you desperately need rest.  In an attempt to rest in God’s presence, you go to a quiet place, but your mind refuses to settle. When I can’t quiet my mind, I find a few minutes to walk outside.  I breathe deeply and…

7 Bible Verses About Feeling Empty Inside

    December 22, 2021 /

Snow is sparse on the muddied earth, and I’m not so sure I want to get out of bed and face the day.  I should probably find my Bible and look up some Bible verses about feeling empty, but I lack the motivation. Instead, five simple words scroll across my mind.  They’re the words of Leanna Tankersley: “Each day we begin again.” My soul needs these words today. I need the simple reminder to get out of my bed and begin again.  God’s mercies are new every morning.  Every time I begin again, I trust in these mercies to fall fresh on me. 7 Bible Verses About Feeling Empty (and How…

3 Biblical Coping Strategies for Stress and Anxiety

    November 10, 2021 /

I sit with the dawn and let my thoughts gather.  The grey morning light lifts her sleepy head, and the thin air is embroidered with a crimson cardinal’s song.  My mind is scattered, and I feel like I’ve been stretched too thin.  I’m thinking about packing lunches, painting walls, mid-morning Zoom calls, and new rain boots for the little one.  I could use a few Biblical coping strategies for stress today. I don’t want to be stretched and stressed. I’m tired of snapping at my kids and rushing through moments I should have cherished. “I need a stress detox,” I whisper to no one in particular. Throughout the past months,…

How to Hear God’s Voice: 4 Keys

    September 29, 2021 /

Do you want to learn to hear God’s voice and stay in step with him as you make decisions?  God wants to reveal himself to us and teach us how to discern his quiet whispers. How to Hear God’s Voice Today, we’ll begin by discussing the most common ways God speaks to us.  Then, we’ll explore a practical way to create space for listening to God.  Let’s start with the ways God often speaks. 1. God speaks through his written Word. Most reliably, God speaks through his written Word. Has a Bible verse ever jumped off the page as if it were written just for you? Have you ever felt…

Dwelling in the Presence of God: 3 Practical Ways

    August 25, 2021 /

The morning glories are climbing the neighbors’ porch beams when I stop along the road and come to a realization: I want to live a life spent dwelling in the presence of God, but hurrying is pulling my attention away from his presence. God is always present with us, which means that we are always dwelling in his presence; yet it’s easy to become distracted by the demands of our days and fail to cultivate the awareness of his presence. As counter-intuitive as standing along the road and watching the climbing vines feels, I could learn something from their slow climb heavenward. Staring at the climbing vines, I’m amazed by…

How to Show Gratitude Toward God When Life Is Tough: 3 Practical Ways

    August 18, 2021 /

After the coffee brews, the final drops patter into the pot like rain filling a bucket or thoughts collecting in the secret place.  Our days have been full here lately, and I’m desperate for some space to let my soul breathe.  I utter a quiet prayer for insight on how to show gratitude to God and close my eyes as thunder echoes in the distance. We all face seasons when life feels overwhelming. We want to give thanks in all circumstances, but it’s not so easy when life doesn’t work out according to our plans. It’s easy to get caught up in all that’s wrong in our lives and forget…

To the Overwhelmed Mother Who Wants Deeper Joy

    June 30, 2021 /

I want to be the kind of woman who knows how to cultivate deep joy.  But mostly, I feel like the overwhelmed mother who yells too much and spends way too much time in survival mode. Encouragement for the Overwhelmed Mother I invite you to join our family in the woods, and we’ll talk about finding joy in motherhood. The jewelweed is shriveling beneath the heavy blanket of summer heat as I lead my three little ones through the forest. We needed some fresh air and time outside the house.   So here we are.  The youngest has fallen at least ten times.  The oldest two are eager to return home…

5 Steps to Take When You’re Feeling Uninspired

    April 7, 2021 /

I’d been feeling uninspired for a few weeks when my life suddenly came to a screeching halt.  I was unmotivated to write, weary from parenting, and I felt stuck. Most of us know all about feeling stuck. We get stuck in bad habits, complacency, escapist behaviors, and deep, muddy ruts along the paths of our lives. What do you do when you’re feeling inspired and struggling to find the courage to do something about it? I wrestled with this question as the milky light of winter dawn eased through the windowpane.  A thought came to mind.  It went something like this: “Have you forgotten your why?” I spend most of…
