14 Bible Verses for Anxiety and Fear
The amber light of morning finds me through a partially drawn curtain. Within the first moments of the day, my mind returns to a situation that’s been filling me with anxious thoughts. “Not today, fear,” I whisper, and I open my Bible in search of Truth. Instead of meditating on my fears today, I decide to make a list of Bible verses for anxiety and fear.
I invite you to soak in these empowering verses today. Also, be sure to read to the end of today’s post for a free devotional eBook to help you overcome anxiety and fear.
14 Bible Verses for Anxiety and Fear
Opening my Bible, I’m reminded that when anxiety and fear come at me, I always have a choice. I can buckle beneath the weight of my paralyzing emotions—giving the enemy a seat at my table. Or I can use the emotions as a prompt to send me running to Jesus’ open arms.
As I sit in the morning light, I run to the open arms of my Savior in my weakness. I also soak in the following Truths. I pray these verses will help you stand on the Truth in your fearful and anxious moments as well.
Bible Verses for Anxiety and Fear
1. 1 Peter 3:13-14
Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.
These verses remind us that we don’t need to fear those who threaten to hurt us for doing what is right. God is with us, and he is our Defender and Advocate.
2. Matthew 10:29-31
Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
God is in control of all things, and nothing will touch us without getting through him first. We can trust that when God permits trouble in our lives, he will also help us to walk through it in his power.
3. Psalm 34:18-19
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
These verses remind us that God is close to us when we are hurting and feeling crushed. He wants to carry us and sustain us.
4. Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
When we tell God what we need, he gives us peace.
Do you need God’s peace amid anxiety today? Turn to him and talk to him.
Find a reason to thank him and then present your requests to him. He will fill you with peace while guarding your heart and mind in Christ.
5. Matthew 19:26
But Jesus looked at them and said to them, ‘With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’
When we feel anxious, worried, or fearful, we can remind ourselves that nothing is impossible with God. No miracle is too great. No obstacle is too overpowering. God is able to work powerfully in our lives. He calls us to trust in him.
6. Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Nothing can ever take God’s love away from his children. No matter what you are facing, remind yourself that God’s love goes with you. Relax into his love. He wants to fill you with peace.
7. Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
This verse reminds us that God’s love will never leave his children. As you face fear and anxiety, lean into God’s loving presence. He is with you, and his presence changes the atmosphere surrounding you.
8. Deuteronomy 3:22
Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.
Do you need someone to take your side in a situation that feels hopeless? God wants to fight for you and defend you.
9. John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
The morning before our first child was born, I was filled with fear and anxiety. I texted a friend and asked her to send me some Bible verses to help with anxiety. She sent John 14:27.
These words carried me through the tumultuous day and have since been a reminder that God wants me to walk in his peace. In even the most challenging situations, he promises this peace and assurance.
Five More Bible Verses for Anxiety and Fear
10. Isaiah 40:31
They who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
This verse reminds us that God will give us all the strength we need to fulfill his plans for our lives. As we look to him and wait upon him, he fills us with strength and enables us to live for him.
11. Romans 8:15
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
This powerful verse reminds us that we are not called to walk in fear. Just as a child feels safe with his loving father, we are safe with God.
When fear arises within you, cry out to him. He is a good Father and wants to carry you and deliver you.
12. 1 Peter 5:6-7
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
I appreciate the image of casting our anxieties on God. When we forcefully throw our worries, cares, and fears onto him, he lifts them because he cares for us.
13. Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Last year, our kids memorized this verse as back-to-school anxiety started to creep in. We repeated it often throughout the first few weeks of school, reminding ourselves that God was with us. Because God goes ahead of us into the future, we don’t need to fear tomorrow.
14. Deuteronomy 3:22
You shall not fear them, for it is the Lord your God who fights for you.
This powerful verse reminds us that when we face life’s battles, God fights for us. Do you need God to fight a battle for you today? Ask him to surround you with his protective wings as he fights this battle.
