A List of Good Habits for Joy and Energy

    November 2, 2022 /

A pewter sky threatens rain, and I stand at the window as the little one calls from the living room.  He wants to know what we’re doing for fun today.  I’ve been deliberately turning to my mental list of good habits daily, and I decide on a trip to the woods. “Let’s head to the creek,” I declare, and within minutes, we’re strolling down the road. “Better hurry up.  It might rain, Mom,” he urges. “A little rain won’t hurt us,” I tell sweet Aiden.  He makes a comment about melting, and we both laugh. Much to our delight, the rain holds off.  We spend an hour throwing rocks into…

5 Morning Routines to Help You Start Your Day With God

    October 19, 2022 /

Autumn rain hangs from the spruce boughs like glass beads.  Cleansing the sleepy earth, it feels like God’s invitation to begin again.  I’ve been thinking about my rhythms lately—analyzing the morning routines that are working for me in this season as well as the ones that aren’t. The Importance of Morning Routines Last week, I felt tempted to return to self-effort in an attempt to restore some off-kilter areas of my life.  However, this morning, the ivory mist reminds me that a Spirit-filled life is not built around willpower but around rhythms. The rhythms we establish ultimately make up our lives. 5 Morning Routines to Help You Begin Well If…

God’s Grace Is Sufficient in Every Season

    July 14, 2022 /

Do you need the reminder that God’s grace is sufficient for whatever you are facing today?  Let’s learn how to lean into his grace and trust that he is working in our lives. God’s Grace Is Sufficient Not long ago, I wrote myself a letter.  I desperately needed the reminder that God’s grace is sufficient in every season of life.  If you need this reminder today, too, these words are for both of us: A Gentle Reminder That God’s Grace Is Sufficient for Us Dear friend, no matter what happens today, remember to breathe. When the to-do list mocks and the work is overwhelming and the noise is deafening, breathe.…

Savoring Life: 6 Practical Ways to Add Joy to Your Life

    February 23, 2022 /

I’m bent over an industrial meat slicer—not thinking a thing in the world about savoring life—when a phrase comes to mind: “Why do we often have to lose what we have to appreciate it?” I’m 21 years old, and I’m far from my home in Pennsylvania.  I’m working in a deli in the middle of Alaska, saving money for next year’s college expenses, and hiking every time I get a free hour. I love Alaska. The view of endless mountains intrigues me. I love to watch the fireweed dance beneath the midnight sun and sit by the river that flows grey with glacial silt. This place meets my expectations and…

3 Ways to Fall More Deeply in Love With Jesus

    February 16, 2022 /

The old sycamore leans over the icy creekbed with shoulders washed white by the weather.  Closing my eyes, I inhale the scent of the forest and pray that I might learn to embrace my moments and fall more deeply in love with Jesus in the process. For the past few years, I’ve been learning to slow down. I’ve been asking God to help me live with less grit and more grace. In the process, God is changing me. I’m also discovering that the secret to living with greater joy and deeper peace is falling more deeply in love with Jesus. What does this look like in my world with winter…

What Does It Mean to Live Life to the Fullest?

    December 1, 2021 /

What does it mean to live life to the fullest? We live our best lives when we feel purposeful, fulfilled, and joyful.  We’re living to the fullest when everyday problems and stressors don’t get the best of us. We’re living to the fullest when we’ve learned to walk in peace regardless of our circumstances.  We have also learned to be thankful in all circumstances. I invite you to join our family on a chilly winter morning, and we’ll talk about living our lives to the fullest. What Does It Mean to Live Life to the Fullest? The moon hangs high in the morning blue, and the little one points in…

How to Show Gratitude Toward God When Life Is Tough: 3 Practical Ways

    August 18, 2021 /

After the coffee brews, the final drops patter into the pot like rain filling a bucket or thoughts collecting in the secret place.  Our days have been full here lately, and I’m desperate for some space to let my soul breathe.  I utter a quiet prayer for insight on how to show gratitude to God and close my eyes as thunder echoes in the distance. We all face seasons when life feels overwhelming. We want to give thanks in all circumstances, but it’s not so easy when life doesn’t work out according to our plans. It’s easy to get caught up in all that’s wrong in our lives and forget…

4 Ways to Grow Spiritually and Connect With God

    July 28, 2021 /

We were in the middle of a full summer schedule when I read these words from late missionary Jim Elliot: “Wherever you are, be all there!  Live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God.” Jim’s words prompted me to ask hard questions about living present in my moments as I sought ways to grow spiritually. Ways to Grow Spiritually and Connect With God Maybe you can relate. You want to grow spiritually, but you’re pulled in dozens of different directions. Most days, you hurry from one task to the next with little space for slowing down to connect with God. The morning I read…

8 Scriptures on Purpose and Vision for Challenging Seasons

    March 3, 2021 /

I wake up grumpy after a particularly difficult week of teaching my kindergartner while the one-year-old howls from the high chair. There’s no way around it: I’m struggling with life.  I didn’t sign up for this.  Pulling out my Bible, I begin digging for Scriptures on purpose and vision. Maybe you need these words today, too. Maybe the job that once felt like your calling now feels like drudgery, or maybe you’ve been trying to find God’s purpose for your life and falling short. Wherever this day finds you, I invite you to join our family in a challenging season as we explore what God’s Word says about purpose and…

3 Unconventional Ways to Worship God While You Work

    September 2, 2020 /

You are completely exhausted as you drive home after a long day of living out your calling. You know there are four loads of laundry waiting to be folded.  The floors are filthy, and dinner waits to be cooked. You’d give just about anything to lie on the couch in front of the TV instead of diving into the work. The last thing on your mind is construing ways to worship God in the middle of your work. Perhaps the idea of worshiping while you work feels like a pursuit reserved for women who don’t have full schedules – or kids. I feel you. I see you. I’m standing with…
